Mill decks sucked in Hearthstone because there was very little counterplay and you kind of knew the second you saw the main mill murloc creature ETB of your deck could race it or not.

Mill in magic is hilarious and I struggle to see why anyone would list alongside something more obviously frustrating like a blue deck. A blue deck can stop you playing the cards in hand, which can feel annoying. A mill deck mills cards in your deck that might as well not exist unless they are in your hand. Even better, a mill deck can remove a bunch of poo poo you don't wanna draw later, even more betterer a mill deck can enable a shitload of cards that are cast from graveyard!

The only thing that really sucks about mill in MtG is you will probably see Jace and christ what a boring and terrible character to have been created. It's rude to remind people they not only wrote such a character, but also roped more than one artist into illustrating him.

I love blue decks and mill decks :v:

Urza won a pod last night. I got a huge board early, got wiped. Built up 2 karnstructs, swung with them and Urza for lethal. I saw the line a turn out, cyc rift with counterspell backup. Officious Interrogation got me 18 clues after someone played Avenger of Zendikar right before my turn.

Mishra fared far worse. Krenko and Helm of the Host generated a huge amount of goblins, then someone cast a board wipe that pinged per creature destroyed. My last game action was getting 40 more goblins before the purge, pumping someone's Yahenni to ludicrous levels.

GreenBuckanneer posted:

there's a player around me who structures decks to have this kind of wincon, arguing that taking <1 minute on all the early turns justifies the 30 minute solitare game at the end? im not a fan

I had mesmeric orb in the Mycotyrant self-mill deck and people got so salty about it that I instead put insidious roots in, which was a missing piece of a semi-elaborate infinite that I purposefully left out to be a little less powerful.

I had to look mesmeric orb and that one sounds annoying not because of the mill, but because it adds a chore to what is otherwise a fairly thoughtless and automatic process.

That effect is cool but it should be worded such that the burden of tracking, counting, and reminding is fully on the one who played the orb. I also like how it puts a hard limit on infinite untap combos.

Yeah when I was new to milling I'd chuck things in opponent graveyards and someone in the pod would have reanimate/recur effects. Now I'm more aware when I'm kingmaking.

Ignore my posts!
I'm aggressively wrong about everything!
I respect people going for a mill victory, because they looked at the 40 life count, and decided that instead their wincon is to deplete the health bar that's over twice as long.

If I ever make a commander deck from scratch, it's gonna be Captain N'gath. Unfortunately it'd have to be completely from scratch, because I own like two Horrors.

as someone with a cap'n deck, you'd probably be better off buying the precon if you can find it at a good price, it contains like 75% of the good horrors in it already so its all in one package lol

So I think I'm giving up on making my wife a U/B Gale deck. If you're making a U/B spells matter commander deck and running 40ish instants and sorceries, there's really only a few ways that you can go and none of them are particularly fun to play, or play against. You can run lots of rituals and high tide and mana rocks and play storm, or you can play proliferate and poison counters, or you can play lots of card draw and tutors and combo and draw your whole deck and win with thoracle or lab maniac. I don't think there are quite a critical mass of token makers like Talrand and Lord of the Nazgul and Murmuring Mystic to win by attacking with tokens. And anyway, she likes green better.

So, now I'm making U/G Gale, with Raised by Giants. Now Gale can be a 10/10, ramp a shitload of lands and also buff spells, and kill people with commander damage! This is almost certainly worse, but probably more fun. Since counterspells don't really have synergy with Gale (because you can cast a sorcery from your gy when you counter a spell, but you can't usually cast a counterspell from the gy by casting a sorcery) It's mostly just cantrips and Simic Ramp into Big Dumb Stuff! I just really wish Berserk wasn't $20, its a cool effect, but not THAT cool.

Heed my words and become a master of the Heart (of Thorns).
Ended up with Gishath + Bear Queen decks for my son and Rin&Serin + Emiel unicorns for daughter.

For myself i got Roon (blink), Avacyn, Isshin, Henzie, Edgar Markov, Voja.

Played a couple of rounds this weekend with Roon and Avacyn.
I had never played blink before and have been curious about such playstyles for a long while, which is why i got this deck. Blink was decently fun, though it took a few turns before i got to blink anything at all and like 3 turns later i was playing full singleplayer solitaire.
I won the round, taking out all 3 opponents (no infinite) but didn’t really have that much fun. I don’t enjoy sitting there trying to work out all the math and interactions while the other players wait for me.

The Avacyn deck looked real interesting on paper but in practice i only got to flip her once.

The hunt for the perfect playstyle/deck continues. I enjoy doing multiple things per turn (and card draw is my favorite thing in the game) but i don’t enjoy doing so many things that turns take 10 minutes like with the Roon deck.
I hate winning with infinite combos, those wins are real phyrric.
I hate the infect/poison mechanic and its interaction vs players
I prefer beneficial effects for me vs oppressive effects for my opponents (e.g. i gain 2 life on card draw > opponent lose 2 life on card draw)

The new teysa, opulent oligarch is pretty fun in that your turns are very short but you're incentivized to crack clues on other people's turns so you'll always be doing something. At its heart it's a death and taxes deck but you can actually go pretty wide and then clean up with starlight spectacular or moonshaker.

I considered this, but there aren't enough boot artifacts to feed him, you have lighting greaves, swiftfoot boots, trailblazer's boots, like 6 total and most of them are bad. Also when you play Gale with a red background, you really have to stop yourself from playing storm with Passionate Archaeologist. Burn is a little easier to do and I saw someone made a deck with Dragon Cultist around that idea.

Agent of the Iron Throne could be competitive, but and there's less overlap with spells, so its more focused on the background and less focused on Gale's ability. For some reason, there's almost nothing on EDHrec for this combo. It seems pretty easy to put together a list without it but I thought it was interesting.

Mostly its because I'm making this for my wife, who really likes Gale, and likes green. 10/10 Gale is also funny

I might just rebuild this deck every once in a while and change the 2nd color to keep it fresh.

Okay my goons, if you are at all curious about the feasibility of Reyhan and Krark as that DINK couple that adopted a shitload of stray cats Oozes....

It's predictably unpredictable. Krark is always going to be feast-or-famine, but if you're playing multiplayer, that's not a bad thing.

Turn 5: "Oh man, Krark is loving me, I can barely keep up with you guys, I am not a threat at all, gee whiz."

Turn 6: "I cast Primal Vigor (because I'm poor and can't justify $40 for Doubling Season). I summon 4x 6/6's, 4x 8/8's, and 4x 10/10's. They have haste and trample. 96 coming at you."

(I had Invigorating Hot Spring for haste, and Semblance Anvil for 1-Drop SAH's, which helps a TON if Krark keeps NOPEing them back to your hand.)

I have a poo poo ton of kaladesh bulk that might make that commander deck shine. It will make Electrostatic Pummler easy to fit in the deck with what cards worked greatly to make mono green standard back in the day. The issue might be actually making this a win condition if and when you do this without tutors.
