Ok we got this one guy, but all the higher up people are still out there. They didn’t really solve anything.

I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that the cleaning crew knew anything about the pollution-mine connection. One of them just found the evil lair and the drill tip, and then another snuck a look at the casefile and decided that they'd all murdered Annie and were uninterested in motive.

Solving one thing is progress towards a goal. You don't have to solve everything to win, you just have to make progress. That's like, literally the entire point of Rust's (shamelessly stolen) speech at the end of S1. Rust and Marty stopped one prolific serial killer from killing, that's a good thing. The cult itself might have escaped, but at least one high ranking member committed suicide or was murdered by his co-conspirators and the demented poison seed of the cult was killed when Rust took the top of his head off. That's a lot of people who won't be drugged and molested or murdered. Honestly, whether the cult even exists 17 years later is a matter of some opinion because it's possible the whole thing was based on one branch of the Tuttle family and they might have died out or just dispersed in the meantime. Of course, most of them will never pay for their sins, but at least some of them did. Similarly, killing the scientists is some progress towards shutting down the mine because the next batch of scientists may not be as willing to cover up the pollution reports from the mine. Also, realistically, it's about the best the indigenous lady hit squad could pull off because at the end of the day they're a bunch of cleaning ladies on a mission and not really a match for riot cops and professional thugs. If there was a real force protecting indigenous women from violence Ennis would probably not be the total poo poo hole that it is. Ithle01 fucked around with this message at 02:14 on Feb 22, 2024 |

What else are they gonnq do?Doltos posted:I don't think that mattered too much for the plot of the show but it did leave an empty feeling at the end. I like how the plot was so dumb I was able to predict it incredibly early on. Anyway, I hope season five is even dumber.

Yeah, they didn't seem to have any idea about the pollution. Just followed a hunch on the star tool and pieced it together. Probably, correctly figured that you couldn't exactly keep a murder a secret in a little place like that so they figured they were all in on it. And as they said, if they were wrong then they figured god/nature would sort them out in the end and it was as close as they could get to any kind of justice . Really needed to set the lab guys up as crazier though. There were the little hints and bits like the crazy notebook but it was too much of a footnote, especially after the opening scene made them just seem fun and normal. Probably just ghosts from old scripts or edits. In general could have skipped a lot of stuff and built up other stuff.

And Annie K figured it out just from some scribbles on a scrap of paper. I went over my desk today and made sure I didn't have any scribbles on random pieces of paper documenting any major scandals at work. Two post its shredded, done. I also learned from this show to take phone photos of any drillbits I see. The scientist guys I think had a deleted scene where they argued about what to do with the body and started eating it, leaving lots of extra evidence which was confusing and ambiguous as the mystery was unfolding.

The one glimpse we get of their notebooks and whiteboards shows a bunch of crazy rambling poo poo from people who needed to get out more. They didn't feel bad about what they were doing and they weren't showing their research to anyone so I didn't think it'd be that weird that he'd write "Once Evil Chemical X hits level Y we can become gods and never sleep!" Also if I was searching a weird hidden room and saw a weird star drill I'd probably think of the big murder with the weird star weapon and go "huh." I also probably just wouldn't go down which is why I won't get a TV show. Messy as poo poo, but above average for a crime procedural if you're counting network ones. More of a slam on them, but eh. I went back to the neat list of shows on page 38 and will second that Deadloch hit a lot of similar themes in a much better way while also being a pretty funny (very) dark comedy. Solid mystery. If the one detective annoys you too much, it doesn't go on like that forever. Also some funny jokes specifically for people who watch a lot of small-town murder series. The Fenris Buhler's Day Off DVD wasn't just someone putting in the same messed up disc and annoying everyone until they had to walk all the way to the entertainment room and open the cabinet to turn it off. This was deep allegory because these guys finally got their day off from fighting over the porn share drive and having sick LAN tournaments at 10PM every drat night.

The research data and the secret lab are safe and the company will just send over another couple of scientists and the poisoning of the community will continue. A) Maybe they didn't trust that some random indigenous folks with Pollution Papers would get much media help on the issue of mining pollution in a nowhere town north of the Arctic circle, on an issue that people will kill to protect. B) I'm sure it wasn't their plan, but the murders directly led to public attention that couldn't be ignored, resulting in the investigation and the eventual mine shutdown

The show spends time trying to tackle serious themes like class, systems of oppression, and modern colonialism. I respect the effort put into those elements, and the actors gave engaging performances. At the same time, the cartoonish progression of the mystery, terrible song choices, and forced callbacks to previous seasons made this a perplexing and occasionally unenjoyable viewing experience.

Well what Danvers leaked was one of the scientists confessing to everything, not some Pollution Documents. So yeah the women should have tied up one of the scientists and made him confess on tape. But they didn't do that (and if they did, people would complain "Why did they do that if they didn't know for sure if it would work?")

it's understandable to think the cult is still in operation, since there's this bit of dialogue: "tuttles, loving men in the video, we didn't get 'em all." "yeah and we ain't gonna get 'em all, that ain't the kind of world it is, but we got ours." there's also the thing where the final thought the show leaves with is "yes there is still an enormous amount of darkness but the light is winning" but yeah by the end of the season there just isn't really a cult anymore. errol was the last vestige of it. there are enormously powerful people who enabled it or were directly involved and will never be brought to justice, but the cult itself is basically gone.

I just watched S1 for the first time this year and the whole theme of rot and decay at the heart of America felt as timely as if it had been written yesterday. The bit where Marty shoots the handcuffed prisoner in the head and without missing a beat Rust immediately starts staging the coverup is incredible, the way they convey how it's just second nature to cops is
