So, apparently my 9-greats maternal grandfather was born in La Rochelle, and his son a little bit north in Beauvoir Sur Mer. Here's a bit about him (and Cardinal Richelieu):

That's a pretty neat story and sucks for your ancestor if he was not a partisan of the conflict (especially the additional bit in your original post). My wife's from around Anjou, so I've visited the area a bunch and read some of the history of the region partly to find historic stuff to visit. Anyway, history is cool, even the lives that aren't recorded in big historical narratives

Or you know, any glass sealed container.

I make moss terrariums as a hobby, most of which are hermetically sealed and not meant to be reopened (often). More than two people have put these things in direct sunlight and then get surprised their plants got cooked sous-vide and/or cracked the container.

Doesn’t seem that hermetically sealed if it lets heat in. (I’m something of an idiot)

OK. More Huguenot chat!

My family came from around Bordeaux. There are family legends about being part of the French royal court but it's probably all B.S. What is true is that my ancestor fled to New York in the late 1600s. Our family name was never anglicized and is pretty rare so anyone with my last name is related to that ancestor. Later members of my family can be found in Continental Army and Union Army records.

Also in a total coincidence my grandfather moved his family to Geneva after WWII (he was in the US Army) and my dad went to school there and learned French. Eventually they moved back to the US.

The air (especially in moss jars, which is humid air) will heat up from direct sunlight and hot, expanding air doesn't like closed containers. Best case scenario the cork/lid gets popped, worst case scenario the glass cracks after the heat turns your plants into porridge.

Marimo balls (not technically moss) for secret santas

Some other small-sized ones I made as giveaway gifts

Medium sized ones

The Biggies

The Problem Child. By far the most bioactive

Bonus weevil that zigged when it should've zagged:

The schad is that the Problem Child jar got all its greenery eaten by the isopods, who it turns out, do like green leaves and moss over rotting wood and fungus. I could replace it but that just makes the problem worse, and the only "solution" is to introduce a predator like a centipede. It's surprisingly hard to find centipedes when you're looking for one.
