I'm still awaiting the medical analysis articles that I'll probably hate-click on. But the early indications are that to make IVF Alabama-legal, every single egg has to be treated as viable, and implanted accordingly, even if it has no chance of developing (at $30K a pop). IVF poo poo is also complicated as hell and requires lots of follow-ups, so it's not really a procedure you can just head over to a neighboring state to go get and come back.

Asking the antis individually when possible, how they feel about surrogates, specific technical details and as many pretend moral conundrums you could come up with, might waste their time away from doing more effective damage? I will credit our miscarriages and IVF cycles with educating me far, far more on what happens between "gently caress" and "baby" than our education system ever did. I was so ignorant that I didn't know how ignorant I was.

SIDE NOTE ON OUR WONDERFUL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM UNDER CAPITALISM

We had insurance that covered this (rarer than hens' teeth), and their negotiated rate was $2500 per retrieval and maybe $750 per implantation. Of course, you have all of the blood tests and ultrasounds and poo poo and that adds up, but that really pulls the veil off the cash price.

And don't get me started on the loving rip-off pricing of meds domestically.

Also - if hypothetically I was in a red state (other than AL I guess) and had a frozen embryo with no intent to implant it, I would be making it a priority to not get caught in the catch-22 that AL embryo-havers are in. There is some dark irony there, I think.

We did IVF, successfully, although it was a long road. The thing that is very sad about that Alabama story is how it started - some idiot patient wandered into an embryo storage facility, opened a freezer, picked up some tubes and dropped them because they were frozen at LN temps and burned their hand. So some people lost their last embryo and sued, which I don’t blame them for. We used our last embryo to get my daughter, I don’t know what I do if I found out I lost it because of some idiot wandering into what should be a secure lab.

I’m going to start a business to make embryos for people as tax shelters. They would need to provide their own cold storage to preserve the life of their dozens of children because I do not want to be criminally liable, nor do I want to be involved in custody of the children. You wouldn’t even need to do a good job of making sure the embryo was actually going to be viable so you could cut a lot of corners here.

It’s weird that at some point the primitive reptilian “danger” impulse humans got mangled into intrusive thoughts to do the dangerous thing instead of not doing it.

It’s also weird that the French term for it, “l’appel du vide” or call of the void is both so much cooler and descriptive than the English term “high place phenomenon” and we haven’t just stolen it.

Ive got a nephew looking to re-up and reclass from 11b to 25b. I don't know anything about army IT, but I suspect it's a lot of weekend call outs so that majors at HHCs can print out a PowerPoint. Is that a good move and do any security clearances come with that job? I'm trying to convince him that if he does make the mistake of reenlisting that he gets a) a marketable skill and b) a security clearance out of it

I'm a 25B -> 17C.

General rule of thumb for 25B is that they're jack-of-all-trades, the training is mediocre/typical Army AIT, they receive no certifications for the training, and when they finish and land at their unit they probably won't actually be expected to certify in order to do their job. They might end up in a signal company where they run a portable network stack, work on HMMWV shelter network equipment, or they might end up in a BDE SASMO doing jack & poo poo, or anywhere in-between.

Again, he won't get any certs from AIT. They might have vouchers available to test on SEC+ or A+ but when I went through they were gatekeeping them behind having all of the supporting skillport classes done, which was a ridiculously long time sink of bad material. Only one guy in my class attempted it and he failed. When he gets to his unit he might be able to attend a class and get a voucher and take SEC+, the big drive is that it hits the DOD 8570 IAT II requirement, but the Army barely ever enforces people being qualified for the positions they're in. In the real world SEC+ hits that same requirement for gov work, but nobody experienced in IT security sees SEC+ as more than an entry level cert. If anyone is trying to dangle JST college credit equivalency in front of him for the AIT, tell him that poo poo is worthless. I got something like 18 credit hours from mine but not a single one applied for actual credit in a CS major at a state school.

If your nephew can reclass to 35T that would be a lot better for solidifying a future career in computer-touching, the TS clearance alone will go a long way. If they're interested enough, the 17C MOS is pretty slick, and while it does require a packet, it's nothing particularly crazy for branch acceptance.

Feel free to PM if you or your nephew have any specific questions.

Lol the only person I know who was raised Catholic & remained Catholic as an adult needed a ton of IVF to eventually have twins. I remember when we visited them in the early 2000s and went to a church event, the priest mentioned amidst plummeting donations and bad press the church needed prayers/money, you know because of a thing that for some reason they still don’t choose to give 100% effort into stamping out.

I have very little to add to this, because I'm Air Force IT, but I spent the better part of a year in 2021-2022 directly assigned to an Army cyber DCO unit, and literally every single 25B soldier was trying to retrain into 17C or go cyber warrant, so 17C would def seem to be the way to go. During my time of duty, everyone who applied and wasn't an idiot eventually got picked up.

Well here's a fun one!

The Russian not-spy / not-intelligence agent Smirnov got himself released on a light bond after being arrested the other day. Special Counsel appealed the release immediately, as the dude lied about the money he has available (said he had $7k when he actually spends his money through his girlfriend/wife/whatever and she has $6M). Looks like the Special Counsel pulled a string somewhere, got another non-magistrate judge, and had the dude rearrested at his lawyers' office:

Apparently the dude is also an Israeli citizen, so even though he had his passports pulled, he could easily go to an embassy/consulate, get another, and go poof.
