It certainly looked scary enough with those big claws but when I dropped small stones on it, the mantis just stood there and took it without moving. They'd bonk off its exoskeleton with enough impact to make it waver slightly but the sucker didn't budget. So while the original image is cursed, I think the mantis is a blessing: it's dumb as a rock, eats other bugs, can't sting, can't hurt me, looks cool.

We didn't have praying mantids or any kind of large, monarch-type butterflies when I was growing up around Philadelphia in the 60s and 70s (just the little white guys). We were told then (late 60s-kid rumor) that it was a huge fine to kill or injure a mantis. First mantis I ever saw was in the south of France in 1975; I was blown away by the beauty & size. I am happy to report that my yard (not that far from Philadelphia, in New Jersey) is loaded with monarchs & other large butterflies, and that we have a huge viburnum that has been a praying mantis nursery for at least 20-years now.
