Former AU politician (federal presumably) was told by ASIO they knew he was a spy and to please stop doing it. No we won't tell you who it is. No we won't charge them for being one. No you can trust us.

Genuinely surprised the cunts didn't cancel the parade.

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.
Two people being murdered by a serving cop with his service weapon is absolutely hosed.

And although it’s a big story, I’m surprised this is the only thing people are fixating on. The inquiry into NSW police systemically ignoring gay hate crimes for thirty years wrapped up just recently, and although the commissioner said sorry, absolutely none of the recommendations have been accepted.

If police want to actually make amends with the queer community, they might want to look at the inquiry’s findings and get started, rather than complaining about not being invited to a party.

Besides, the cops are still going to Mardi Gras anyway! They’ll be at the Hordern with sniffer dogs, 100%.

I had a girlfriend in my very late teens that introduced me to politics and among the events she took me too, she took me to IWD marches and working bees back in 1997. The people and the vibe were so very different to the RSVP emails I now get from my work about an IWD coffee and cupcake morning tea to celebrate the achievements of women. Strong women vs corporate hacks, I just loving hate having to go along and watch how watered down it is and eat my lovely cupcake and feel like a class traitor.

edit: I should point out when I say the "celebrate achievements of women", its a celebration of corporate achievements and is as far removed from any social struggle as possible.

The earliest version reported was a "Women's Day" organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. This inspired German delegates at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference to propose "a special Women's Day" be organized annually, albeit with no set date;[8] the following year saw the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women's Day across Europe. After women gained suffrage during the Russian Provisional Government in 1917, IWD was made a national holiday on March 8;[9] it was subsequently celebrated on that date by the socialist movement and communist countries. The holiday was associated with far-left movements and governments until its adoption by the global feminist movement in the late 1960s.

I’ve been thinking about where the political parties are on housing and where they are headed.

Liberals have sort of become the party of the top hat and monocle wearing negatively geared investor class.

Labor is sort of the same but is better at at least pretending to care about the issue.

The only major party promoting home ownership over landlords seems to be the greens? What would zombie Robert Menzies think.

For as long as I can remember politics is about pandering to property owning boomers. But that can’t last, the boomers are dying out and now people born in 2006 can vote.

There just won’t be enough boomers to keep the Liberals in power like they used to.

But neither major party tries to appeal to young people priced out of home ownership.

Something’s got to change. I hope.

Nothing will change as long as a large majority of voters are homeowners, because they have a vested interest in maintaining the value of their existing property. We'll likely end up in a situation like the UK, where Sydney and Melbourne (London) are just utterly unattainable unless you bought in two decades ago (and increasingly unattainable to even rent in) and young people live there in semi-poverty during their 20s to build up their careers before eventually decamping to regional towns to start a family.

Is this good? No, but I don't think it's even really the fault of political parties, it's a majority of our own society because we've painted ourselves into this ridiculous corner where a huge amount of most families' wealth is tied up in their house.

If it ultimately leads to a de-concentration of population from Australia's handful of biggest cities it might not be the worst thing in the world, fifty years down the track. Sucks to live through it though.

In Victoria at least liberals are caught between major donors in the property industry and what remains of their party base who are very NIMBY

Greens want to fund social housing but often get sucked into nimbyism through a local democracy lens

Labor wants to do whatever the property council asks it to this week
