that's true. and tbf in 4 nobody could have anticipated that there's a sea current running directly from an offshore prison for super murderers directly to the orphanage. that land is mega cursed why did anyone want it.

Kiryu has a complicated relationship with the tojo in that he doesn't want them to collapse but also wants them to leave him the hell alone. still they're the ones who actively get him involved most of the time

The game gave a backstory to why he's cold when his lover, Yui betrayed him, he saw her living happy with the captain, and began getting shivers from that point on.

It’s honestly really good writing it seems fantastic at first and really strikes you that this dude is wearing a coat and is alway cold in Hawaii. But instead of just being a fun quirk because he’s so quirky it’s grounded in emotional truth but exaggerated. When I’m sad or heartbroken i always feel a lot colder. It’s an observed part of being human that’s exaggerated so you become interested in the dude instead of it just being woe is me navel gazing

I like the song of the Baracuda mooks which at some point just goes "Baracuda" in a silly dubstep voice.
Also the song which plays at the end when Kiryu changes his outfit What's that one called anyway?

But I absolutely hated the song in the labyrinth. It felt way to ominous and dreary for a fun outing of friends on an exploring adventure. Totally ruined the mood. I permanently listened to songs from the playlist instead. "A long-awaited spacetime journey" comes to mind.

Finished the game last night.

I'll admit I marked out a little bit during the finale when you're controlling Kiryu with support from Daigo, Majima, and Saejima.

My feelings on the ending/overall plot - Messy. Game is saved by the great gameplay and amazing character moments and banter. The overall mystery kinda sucks. The ending feels so incredibly rushed. "Welp. We're back in the bar. Ebina disappeared. The end." It felt like half of the plot points where dragged out 5x as long as they needed to be and the other half were only given 1/5 the time they needed.

I had a great deal of fun just playing the game and hanging out and going on adventures. The core adventure was kinda lame. Bryce is a bad antagonist. Ebina isn't much better. Luckily, the rest of the game was a loving blast.

Also please RGG, no more "the punchline is they got raped" substories.

As I work through the series, I basically skimmed 3 and 4. I probably missed most of the substories in 3 and did none of the side activities, while in 4 I did almost all the substories except the hostess ones, but I skipped all the side activities. But now I'm in Yakuza 5 and the taxi stuff managed to grip me as much as pocket circuit or running Sunshine/Four Shine, it's a really nice return to form.

My problem with the taxi in 5 is that there are a handful of ones that involve driving and loads that are just cutscenes. I mean, the driving isn't very good so I prefer this to loads of bad driving missions, but I'm just like... why not make the driving less bad?

Well, it's the studio that had a perfectly good dancing game in 5 then the very next release (Y0) say "let's include dancing, but this time we'll make it more complicated and less intuitive."

That said, I'd love it if they brought back dancing in 9, just as long as it's using inputs like Y5.

I kinda liked the dancing in 0! I wasn't very good at it but it was fun to try to hit the d-pad in time with the music to end up at the square you were aiming for and press the right button. It was something a bit more puzzly than the typical rhythm game 'icons move up the screen press when it hits the line' style. Like Kiryu is trying to figure out how to dance.

Playing karaoke in games before (I think) 6, though? Oof. I hate how it's broken up across multiple lines on the screen. It always makes me lose track going from one line to the next, even when I know the song, because the speed of the drat line changes so much!

Honestly it's not even the mechanics - although the racing is perfectly fine and it's fun to customise your car, it's the vibes though. Everyone at the taxi office is nice and it gives off that same kind of warm feeling as you get with Yuki or Pocket Circuit Fighter and the rest of those crews where you just want to spend time with them and see where their stories go.

Admittedly Saejima's dojo in 4 had some pretty fun interactions with your fighter and Sodachi, but the actual fights themselves were miserable and made me give it up quickly.

Sapozhnik

Y0 dancing is fine-ish and actually has some pretty original mechanics to it.

It's not off-sync, the steps are just quantized to the nearest 1/8th note, so in something like I'm Gonna Make Her Mine the onbeat steps are very different to the song's offbeat rhythm, which is probably what trips a lot of people up.

I would've liked more driving (if it was good) in the taxi missions but don't get me wrong, I love the little slice-of-life stories that Y5 has in abundance - that's why I brought up the TV show Midnight Diner (there are two on Netflix, the one subtitled Tokyo Nights is the second chronologically). It is Like A Dragon/Yakuza Substories: The TV Series.

The substories and side-jobs in these games are often soap-opera drama with just the right amount of silliness and heart to make them genuinely endearing and I absolutely love stumbling into some of the characters involved in later games.

It's probably lack of doing all the life links. Couldn't trigger one until I went to daytime, then the last one wouldn't trigger since I'm not at awakening 9. It's frankly pretty frustrating because I just want to do the 4 shine and it just won't trigger no matter how many times I go outside it.

One of the other big problems with this game is there is just way, way way too much combat. It's much better combat than the last one but it's still extremely tedious to go around fighting mooks trying to get awakening up. The game knows it's tedious and let's you auto battle. Just skip all that poo poo and rebalance it.

In the previous Yakuzas I was doing like 30 street fights a game and using beads of gold fortune nonstop to not deal with this crap.

How does SP work in Sujimon battles? I thought it somehow determined who went first, but the game told me after I lost to Ace that the individual sujimon's speed stat is what matters. I see that moves each cost SP but I'm confused about how that relates to the meter that decides whose turn it is.

I'm also barely winning gym battles (or failing them) even with my guys awakened and at the level limit and I can't figure out if it's because I'm missing something or just too dumb for battleboys....

You get a turn at 10 SP. Different attacks cost different amounts of SP, and the more SP you spend the more damage you do. The rate at which the SP gauge fills depends on the combined speed of your front row sujimon.

My strategy has basically been to use a high attack sujimon with a 10 sp move in the middle, and two high speed sujimon on the side. Hasn't failed me yet.

The meter stores a maximum of 10 SP; when you get to 10 SP it is your turn. The cumulative speed of your front line (alive or dead) determines how fast your meter fills up. The more SP you spend on a move, the more SP you'll need to regenerate before you can go again.

Kiwami Gold has bonkers high speed and strength, and a 10SP five-star attack. And it always hits at least neutral because nothing is strong against light. Also his special is more or less a full heal to your entire front line.

So just, uh, randomly get him from the gacha like I did and flank him with the two highest-speed guys you can find, and you've won Sujimon
