Arevalo finally took office after all the attempts to prevent that, protests, legal challenges, and everything else. quote:GUATEMALA CITY, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Anti-corruption crusader Bernardo Arevalo was sworn in as Guatemala's president in the early hours of Monday after a chaotic inauguration that was delayed for hours by a last-ditch attempt by Congress opponents to weaken his authority. Well let's hope there are indeed no more human rights violations ever again

I don't know if it's coincidental, over the last couple of weeks I've been getting a lot of "suggested for you" video in my social media feeds that are all titled something like "Watch Milei Own the Globalists at the WEF" or "Milei Makes a Bunch of Socialists Cry".

I was at a manifestation yesterday but since im not at buenos aires i cant really comment on the protests there. Here it seemed pretty large for the city, im bad at estimating crowds, but at some point i assume there must have been a couple thousands. Some of these crowds went on for blocks on end. Not nearly as massive as when we won the world cup tho lol. someone threw water from like a 12th floor three times, but it became a fine mist so it didnt do much. Im hoping for the sake of the people mildly sprayed by it that it was just water.

Things are getting complicated, Milei is dedicated to antagonizing absolutely all the governors of the different provinces, in this last week, a "debt" was collected for the money that had to go to the province that is the main oil producer. In response, the governor of the province told him that if he did not transfer the funds, he was going to stop the production of gas and oil. And the president, in his immense wisdom, decided to respond by retweeting a photo of the governor with his features photoshopped to make it look like he has down syndrome. This was last friday. To exemplify how bad everything is going, in December I hired a health service, 87,000 pesos. Today the invoice for March arrived for 220,000 pesos. almost 300% increase in 3 months.

I went to Brazil on vacation oin December, and got back a week ago. It's like I landed in a different country, closer to the horror stories that came out of Venezuela. Public transportation and gas has gone up by between 400% to 500%. Food items have doubled or tripled in price. I talk to people on a fixed income and they are literally moving in with relatives because there's no way to afford rent and food. Milei did a special speech in Congress tonight, supposedly to mend fences with the province governors. I have not seen the full thing yet, but apparently he offered a deal with 10 of them in exchange for getting his superpowers package passed in Congress. The peso seems to have gained some value compared to the brazilian Real, though how much of that is due to the austerity shock is up for doscussion (a fair bit of the recent devaluation was a result of the protests plus the adjustment shock). It's still losing against the US dollar. Milei is also a star among the chud bolsonaristas of Brazil (and a good chunk of the media), and US Treasure secretary Janet Yellen has given him a green light, meaning he'll likely get some IMF backing.

Depends on the audience, I guess. Milei passes as cool and edgy for some people. Even his ridiculous, like dressing up in superhero costumes, has some appeal with young "anarchicapitalists" or libertarian types Bolsonaro is an old military pig that reminds people of their nazi uncles and grampas

Bolso was a loving trog, but not really in an entertaining way once he got the president job. He made at least a token effort to be respectable once in power while planting his militia gangsters in every position he could. Whenever he said or did something particularly horrid, he'd lamely walk it back a few days later or claim it was taken out of context, instead of doubling down like his chuddiest followers demanded. Several of my former friends who were bozo supporters whined that he was not being the 'myth' anymore. Milei is still a dorky showman, calling people retards, and his government so far seems to be a much bigger shock because he is far more of an ideologue than Bozo ever was.

My in laws are still broadly on board with Milei as 'the last chance to break the country from the horrors of Peronism'. These are people who are not on fixed income and have access to dollarised investments/income and so are somewhat insulated from the effects of massive inflation. Their attitude is very reminiscent of the 'your deaths are a price I'm willing to pay' meme. They're also fully of the opinion that the crazy ideologue image is an invention by the left and Milei being bad at framing his policies or using technical language that creates bad sound bites. My Spanish isn't good enough and my interests isn't strong enough to read through all of his speeches to see if some of the wilder stuff is explained more clearly in context but based on hearing those same agreements about right wing populists in my own neck of the woods I'm inclined to believe it's a way of ignoring the unpalatable parts.

Ecuador and Mexico are feuding after Ecuador raided the Mexican Embassy to capture their former Vice President and put him on trial for corruption charges. https://apnews.com/article/mexico-ecuador-diplomatic-crisis-de5aa3a638b54fdfa3474c8ee25ca57e I don't really know how serious the corruption charges are and whether it was worth the diplomatic trouble to get the guy or alternatively, whether it was worth it on Mexico's end to try giving the guy asylum, but this is made more funny by Ecuador's history of sheltering Julian Assange in their embassy.

Speaking as someone who indeed watched with amusement as Assange turned one of the Ecuadorian embassy rooms in London into a turd closet, to the fury of both the British government and the poor embassy staff desperately trying to counter the smell, it does reek of hypocrisy. Doesn't Mexico have an extradition treaty with Ecuador?
