Read an article in a swedish magazine about led lights in cars and the average lifespan is around 15 years and a typical replacement cost is around 1500$\€. So that means the yearly cost is 150 bucks if they last that long.

To me this shows that technological progress is being hijacked or enshittified by companies using it as a way to make more money of the customer. And I don't think it's only LED lights that's affected.

I am 100% convinced that you could make a modern led light for a car and base it around some relatively cheap standardized led bulb that is as easy as an H4 to replace. If you wanted to. But nobody wants to.

I feel like headlight tech has evolved to surface of the sun brightness to try and combat car interiors now being lit up because woo LCD screens everywhere! Of course those headlights are also 'smart' which means they can charge the earth for whatever garbage they load into them (they don't loving work either which makes it worse).

I have to assume the cameras are auto-scanning licence plates and when they do that cops get a little preview of the car its supposed to be on, someone at the DMV didn't update a record or something I'm guessing.

Traffic management is a hot topic here at the moment, seems orange cones and the cost of traffic management trigger boomers something fierce. Auckland even elected a boomer as gently caress mayor, who's platform included reducing the number of orange cones. Even though he can't do anything about it since he can't change the national laws that govern traffic management, and the reasons there's so many cones is because we're doing a fuckload of infrastructure work. People are loving insane. The public are ungrateful, callous fucks and don't give a poo poo about your safety. Chuck it in.

A few years ago, this happened: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/312948/stop-go-trial-man-found-guilty-of-murdering-roadworker

quote:

A jury has found Quinton Winders guilty of murdering George Taiaroa, who was operating a stop-go sign in Waikato in 2013.

Mr Taiaroa, a 67-year-old father of four, was fatally shot on 19 March 2013 while at work at a one-lane bridge near Atiamuri, south of Tokoroa.

After deliberating for 17 hours, the jury of seven women and five men this afternoon returned the unanimous guilty verdict.

The Crown's case was that Winders, 45, had a minor run-in with Mr Taiaroa and returned to the roadworks a week later, shooting him in the head before fleeing in his blue Jeep Cherokee.

Being a roofer is more dangerous than being a cop. Or a commercial fisherman. There’s tons of jobs more injurious and deadly. Delivery driver is one of the few that’s more dangerous because people point guns at you.

Description in source:

quote:

Derrick operators in oil, gas, and mining
BLS Category: Derrick, rotary drill, and service unit operators, oil, gas, and mining
Fatal injury rate: 46 per 100,000 workers
Total deaths (2018): 20
Salary: $51,390
Most common fatal accidents: Transportation incidents, contact with objects and equipment
These oil workers setup, maintain, and operate the derrick and drill equipment used to extract oil and gas and mine for materials. The derrick is the structure above a well that holds the drilling equipment, while the drill rotates to displace the earth. The derrick may also include pumps to extract the oil or other materials from the well.
Transportation incidents and contact with objects and equipment were the two leading causes of death for these workers.

I'm surprised even that the main cause of cop death is violence as opposed to vehicle accident, I recall that coming up in the past as a big one, killing more than violence.

I wonder with logging, obviously getting crushed by a tree aint good, but if the fact that so much logging goes on in remote locations means incidents that might be survivable in the city aren't in logging because of the delay in getting medical care.

Looking through the list it looks like falls, vehicle accidents, rotating equipment/crushed, mostly people being oblivious to their surroundings. I cant remember how many times I've had people walk right under the load I have hanging from a crane or ignore the danger high voltage testing signs and tape. Number 19 is odd to me though, are there that many people getting killed over auto repairs?

Surprisingly not that much of a problem - I've stayed with friends just before The Cutting and there is a network of paths / dirt roads the public isnt allowed to access around the back of the properties. You have resident passes / car stickers so you dont get held up getting in or out. The event organisers try to not piss the residents off, some of whom have been there decades and I think a couple of families even owned their property before the track was a thing (Of course the residents arent the orginal generation but they have lived there their entire lives)
