How much more complex is the new Shiren than Tangledeep? Tangledeep always seemed to have more systems to pay attention to, what with the monster capture/raising and trees and such, and it got a bit overwhelming.

Tangledeep has more statistical complexity than Shiren. Shiren is all about creative item management, Tangledeep is about character builds (like TOME). The only stats in Shiren are level, HP, Fullness, Strength, and weapon & shield levels.

Shiren's depth lies in the enemy design and item interaction. Enemies do all kinds of weird gnarly stuff, but so do your various grasses, staves and scrolls, which take the place of powers, spells etc.

I'd say Shiren is a bit simpler in that sense? It's kind of subjective because there's tons of moment to moment tactical depth, but there are no skill trees or long term builds to worry about. Shiren himself can only move and attack, you never learn active abilities or anything like that. Instead, the dungeon is full of consumable items with different effects, and enemy types all have their own gimmick to play around. It can end up being kind of puzzle like, where you look at a hard situation and try to figure out the best way past with the items you have on hand.

I've been really enjoying Cobalt Core, a sci-fi deckbuilder roguelight where you put together a crew, where each crew member brings different cards to your deck, ie one is all about moving your ship either out of harms way or into better firing positions, another is all about your shields and energy per turn or another focused on attacking. Limited in the beginning with only three crew members but more unlock through runs. It's a really charming game and I love the banter between your and enemy crews. Only issue I've had with the game so far is the limited bosses, something I hope the devs add more to in the future.

Disco Elysium can genuinely just be played the way you'd read a book or listen to an audiobook. It's excellent and I'd consider it a whole different category altogether. I want to read the book that world is based on but I don't think it was ever properly translated (I know there's a fan one but I want a book to own).

Enjoy the Oracle games. I don't love them and my last replays took me a long time as I found to be slogs and too long in general. They're not as charming as Link's Awakening, few things are, but get by on cool gimmicky weapons and dungeons. Probably the worst examples of Zelda's classic formula since it becomes very blatant how you're locked out of areas. The in-between dungeon sections really dragged at times too. But that's me.

Yeah I think that's why I stalled out on Disco Elysium, it feels like reading a book so when I'm ready to play some games it's not what I'm in the mood for.

I'm enjoying Seasons so far, two dungeons in it's interesting and fun. It definitely feels more "gamey" than I remember other old Zeldas being, like the in between dungeon sections feel very off in a way I can't put my finger on, but I don't dislike them. Agreed that it lacks Link's Awakening's charm.

I think the gamey feeling comes from how blatant the game is about locking you out of areas and how everything devolves into some sort of fetch quest for random NPC you just met and won't see again. It's very obvious "game" elements wherein other contemporary Zeldas those sort of things were far more organic. You'll quickly discover how little you use most weapons outside of their dungeon/movement obstacle.

LttP practically didn't seem to gate you (it obviously did), but given how much of the map you had instantaneous access to you didn't mind as much, and as awkward as some rocks or pegs could be, other barriers like the broken bridges felt a lot more natural, and most tools got some use outside of their respective niches.

LA is also very gamey but the charm carries it through. You end up falling in love with every random NPC and their little quest that lets you access the next area.

It is high-time Nintendo make a new 2D Zelda let alone a more traditional one. I think they can definitely do something good between the philosophies of Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild Tears of the Kingdom.

An arrogant refusal to embrace the spear. And the mode where your damage resistance goes up each time you die.

Any one that would come out would basically not involve most of the original team since Dennis Dydack burned every single ounce of goodwill he had in the industry and Kenneth McCulloch was arrested for child pornography.

It's worth looking up Dennis Dydack's career sometime, few people have hosed themselves as repeatedly and readily as that dude, which is why even in an industry where you can generally keep failing if your name is recognizable he managed to poo poo himself into the Do Not Touch corner.

There are so many new types of insanity effects the modern system could handle. It's something that I'm sure people have tried to build around, nothing gets picked up, etc.

You don't have to do like the original IP. Just make it *like* that game.

I think that's just because while those games are popular among Fire Emblem fans, Fire Emblem itself was a niche within a niche until Awakening hit the comparative big time, so Nintendo's nervous that they won't sell enough to justify the cost of a remaster.

And I say this as someone who owns RD and would be a mark for a Tellius remake.
