Just seconding this. In Malaysia they’re called roti prata and I sometimes daydream about flying to the other side of the world to eat them. There’s a variant where they sandwich a bunch of lamb between two large sheets of prata called Murtabak and it’s greasy and glorious.

jaete posted:Ok stupid question: why? Wasn't the fixed terms act abolished? So the PM could just decide to not have an election this year... but everyone is completely certain that he will call an election this year I guess, why exactly? The FTPA (First Toast Post Aaah!) set the minimum to 5 years, so the coalition partners couldn't (threaten to) explode the coalition for political gain, but there's always been a maximum. Though it's probably written on a stone in Wiltshire and also made up, but thankfully the government can't just go on forever. E: a brief wiki-looki while cooking my dinner says that the 2022 bill that repealed the FTPA also re-affirmed the 5-year maximum, which was in force before since the Parliament Act 1911 Bobstar fucked around with this message at 20:54 on Mar 3, 2024 |

I mean rishi has a big majority, for now, why not just change it to ten years?

Because even Rishi's own MPs hate his guts and don't want to spend another 6 years in government.

The fixed term parliaments act and anything like it is just meaningless anyway. An act of parliament cannot bind a future parliament. They can just say "The [blank] act notwithstanding, we do the thing the [blank] act says we couldn't do", with a simple majority. So even if you have an act that says "You need a 2/3rds majority to do [thing]", you can just have a simple majority vote to say that doesn't count anymore.

Technically parliament could pass a law that says we don't need to have elections, as they did during the second world war. They voted each year to extend the maximum another year.

You can get it in some of the Malaysian restaurants in London but its a far, far cry from the real thing. If your pastry skills are up to snuff you can try making it at home. The ingredients are easily available anywhere (in contrast to some of the more arcane Malaysian recipes) but the execution is very technical.

Echoing the knife sharpening comment. It’s nowhere near as difficult as people make it out to be on a whetstone and I find it pretty soothing. And you end up with a knife that could cleave through the crust of hell

Just caught up with gorgeous George chat, naan chat and Rachel Reeves Cuck Chair chat and can contribute to knife chat. Tramontina 17cm Cleaver is a good option but why the gently caress are you chopping fruit with a cleaver? Get a decent chefs knife if you don’t have one. Grab something by Mercer Culinary as pretty solid price and a sharpening steel or a whetstone. If your budget is pretty high grab a Wustof, generally grab a couple of 15cm chef knifes, a pairing knife, bread knife, Cheese Knife, Carving Knife, Turning knife in that kind of order or priority. Most sets can be poo poo. So what are the odds that the Tories pull a crash the economy budget then?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/03/ministers-consider-ban-mps-engaging-pro-palestine-climate-protesters quote:Ministers are considering proposals to ban MPs and councillors from engaging with groups such as the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil. The plans, put forward by the government’s adviser on political violence, John Woodcock, say mainstream political leaders should tell their representatives to employ a “zero-tolerance approach” to groups that use disruptive tactics or fail to stop “hate” on marches.

In non-pastry food chat, what's the simplest way to start a slow cooker chicken stew? Cut the thighs into chunks and fry in butter to brown. Remove from pot. Add carrot, celery , onion and gently fry that in butter until golden, add a level tablespoon of flour and stir in. Add a glass of white wine if you want, otherwise just add 500 ml chicken stock. Return the chicken to pot Add some fresh herbs, mushrooms, whatever you’ve got. Stick in oven or simmer on hob.

We've had it at both 3 and 7 years before, and yeah it just takes another act of Parliament to change it. But the last time Parliament decided to just....stick around it was called the Long Parliament and it was quite literally after a civil war. Also ended up rather unpopular after a while. Now, Parliament could do the same thing again, technically, if Rish could get the votes - but that is, effectively, a coup in the same way that Hitler's Enabling Act was technically perfectly legal but, y'know, Nazi Germany is not the Weimar Republic.

Return the chicken to pot Thank you - the thighs have both skin and bone, I was hoping I could just chuck them in the slow cooker at the appropriate point and let the cooking do the work of getting the meat off and take the bones out at the end. Recipes do seem consistent about browning the chicken before putting it in the pot though so that's a start

That was David Amess, and it wasn't during an election. Neither was Jo Cox, technically - she was murdered by a neo-Nazi Brexiteer during the EU referendum campaign because she supported Remain. And yes, it was a lot more than usual. Jo Cox's death was the first time an MP had been murdered since 1990 and the only time a Labour MP has ever been murdered.
