Looking At Them Tittys
1969 - 1998

Toilet Rascal

It is spring (by the meteorological calendar), so I'm freshening up the OP with a new thing where I post from some book I'm reading contains something unexpectedly relevant to current events, so here's one from Folk devils and moral panics by Stanley Cohen, where he discusses the tipping point where a simple moral panic (which may come from something genuinely terrible, like the murder of Jamie Bulger, but goes in a stupid direction, like mass blaming of horror VHS tapes) and outright group hatred (which is what starts pogroms).

The part where he draws the line is a good look at the 00s prequal to SMOL BOTES and ends up slamming both major parties and every British paper repeatedly.

The First Botes posted:

In tabloid rhetoric, especially the Daily Mail (whose campaign of vilification is too deliberate and ugly to be seen as a mere moral panic), the few nuances in these assumptions disappear:
the untypical is made typical; the insulting labels are applied to all. (The bogus/genuine dichotomy appeared also in 58 per cent of all relevant articles over 1990–1995 in The Guardian, The Independent and The Times; one-third of Guardian and Independent references either criticized this idea or were citing others.)

This area is crucially different from my other six examples.

First, although there have been intermittent panics about specific newsworthy episodes, the overall narrative is a single, virtually uninterrupted message of hostility and rejection. There is a constant background screen, interspersed with vivid little tableaux: Tamils at the airport, stripping in protest; Kurds clinging to the bottom of Eurostar trains; Chinese suffocating to death in a container lorry.
Second, these reactions are more overtly political than any others – not just because the problem is caused by global political changes, but because the reactions have a long history in British political culture. Moreover, successive British governments have not only led and legitimated public hostility, but spoken with a voice indistinguishable from the tabloid press.

The media’s lexicon of verbal abuse has kept up a constant level of bigotry. A recent analysis shows Scottish newspapers highlighting the same negative words and racial stereotypes; presenting asylum myths as fact; openly hostile about the presence of asylum seekers in Britain and openly suggesting they go back to their country of origin. (Note though that only 44 percent of references were judged as wholly negative, 21 per cent as balanced and 35 per cent as positive.)

[there's a giant list of hateful headlines 1992-2002 here]

The immediate effects of such sustained venom are easy to imagine, but harder to prove. In three days in August 2001 a Kurdish asylum seeker was stabbed to death on a Glasgow housing estate and two other Kurds attacked.
The UNHCR issued a statement saying that this was predictable given the ‘climate of vilification of asylum seekers that has taken hold in the UK in recent years’. This branding has become so successful that the words ‘asylum seeker’ and ‘refugee’ have become terms of abuse in school playgrounds.

In May 2002, the Labour government announced a new round of plans under the slogan of ‘zero acceptance’: shut the Sangatte refugee camp on the French side of the Channel Tunnel; intercept boats carrying illegals; speed up deportation procedures.

I'm getting a vivid vision of the near future. :stonk:

Carrying on from the previous discussion, I used to be very involved in militant anti-fascism and after a while I don’t really hate the fash. They were my enemy and I was theirs but we had common ground in that we all recognised something was deeply wrong and had the will to try and change it. I got to know some of them purely by nature of being stood in the cold with them for hours at a time and I’d happily clobber them, and sometimes did, and vice versa, but we both had a separate disdain for the liberals, a much more awful group of privileged wankers who saw nothing wrong at all. And I don’t mean the real nazis, I mean the maladjusted weirdos who’d fallen down the rabbit hole. I met so many of them who I thought “gently caress, that’s such a shame, cos we see the same problems but we’re knocking gently caress out of each other because you lot have misabttributed that to Muslims or gays or whatever”

Yeah, even accounting for the various catastrophes in other parties' local campaigns, this seems like an extremely convincing repudiation of them on a national level.

For some reason it annoys me that Galloway doesn’t match his hat to his suit. Like the hat is a silly gimmick but come on man put a little effort in, your can’t do black hat and blue suit, it just looks bad. Don’t wear a hat darker than your suit unless your suit is light tan or white. I know you have lighter coloured hats, I’ve seen them, surely you must have tried them on when getting dressed, how did you put on the black one and thing “yep, this is right”. Honestly!

yeah, i mean it's just one by-election and Labour and the Greens both had dumpsterfire campaigns, but the Lab/Con/LibDem voteshare went from 90%+ to 25%, with 60% going to two very different outsiders whose common theme was 'we are being mistreated and ignored by the political establishment as a whole (galloway being a Known Crank campaigning on 'we're all being made complicit in a genocide that the main parties will not recognize and are trying to suppress the voices of those who do' and tully being a guy who entered politics two weeks ago on a platform of 'i'm openly eschewing positions on all national policy questions, i just know our wonderful town is simultaneously starved of funds while being mocked as the weird northern nonce place, and i will be an advocate for us and our families')

seems to speak to a deep dissatisfaction with how things are, if only we had a compassionate leftist leader with grass roots support who could offer an alternative national vision. oh well!
