I do industrial cleaning and it's still loving weird how far they pay me to travel to do it. I'm on a trip from Iowa to Florida to sandblast corrosion at a power plant. Like I'm grateful for the work obviously but is there no one in the SE US that does sandblasting or dry ice blasting? Is it really that niche?

As a worker you definitely need to be in good physical shape and be comfortable driving large vehicles that are not owned by you. Sandblasting seems cheap enough to get into but it involves a lot of containment/cleanup. Dry ice blasting produces an abrasive spray that leaves no new material behind but yeah the dry ice machines are pricey little shits.

As an insurance adjuster, I have to contract folks to do stuff like this, and if n one is available locally for a reasonable figure, I'll check around other regions of the company to see if the quote is out of line. If it's not, the travel expense is usually only a few hundred bucks.

Where in Florida, roughly?

As what I now do is vaguely adjacent to that, a fuckton of contractors and whatnot from across the country bid on jobs in Florida. I�ve lately heard a bunch of horror stories about painting companies coming down here from the Midwest and Northeast and loving poo poo up because they materials up there (Both of the buildings themselves and the paint/sealant stuff) are different than the stuff down here (Since we deal with constant rain and hurricanes and all that poo poo).
