It can be also as simpleminded as "Democrats and RINO republicans are advocating strong stance against Russia, so by undermining that effort constantly they lose because their policies fail, and we win because our policies succeed". Sure there are bought ones and blackmailed ones leading the pack but I know enough people in politics to know that there doesn't need to be much processing power behind the eyes to get elected on suitable location and platform. Join a popular rhetoric that sinks to your voters and ride that, and who cares about long-term repercussions or foreign policies, foreigners don't vote and voters have a memory of a gold fish.

Ironically, the parts of Germany that Russia was in charge of denazifying are now the most neo-nazi infested. After a good initial start hanging Nazis and war criminals in the post war trials, they completely gave up on it in the following years and let the neo-nazi problem fester. It's kind of come to also refer to specific types of leftists who are so upset with America and/or "The West" that they will root for any power that could make the world "multi-polar", even if those powers are fascist right-wing dictatorships like Russia. You can even see them express the "Soviets-can-do-no-wrong" mentality as you say when it comes to denying past crimes against Soviet/RF peoples and territories as part of their rationalizations to argue in favor current RF atrocities. It's true that calling them tankies kind of confuses the issue, but here we are. Also, lol the T-14. Whenever people found out I was a tanker and later worked on tanks, I'd get questions about what I thought of the T-14, and I said I'd only give a poo poo if they were more than a prototype program. Even when I saw T-14s finally in motion, I could only think of them as about two steps further than something like the Black Eagle.
