This may not be a "small" question, but what's the current scientific consensus on what drives transgender people - is it social or biological? I've often thought that if culture did not force strict gender norms it wouldn't even be a question, like why would someone even question their gender identity if there was no expectation for folks born as men or women to behave in a particular way. In a hypothetical society where it's cool if you have a penis and are into dresses, or a vagina and are into truck engines, would there still be transgender people?mystes posted:You probably don't want to use the word "transgenderism" someone awful. posted:(also don't use the term "transgenderism" please) Fixed, sorry. In a hypothetical society where it's cool if you have a penis and are into dresses, or a vagina and are into truck engines, would there still be transgender people? Generally, trans people don't transition because "I like dresses therefore I am forced to get a vagina." They medically transition because it allows them to feel more comfortable in their body. Also, trans people are more likely to be gender non-conforming than cis people. Plenty of trans men like dresses and dislike trucks. The evidence for biological etiology is the same as for being gay. It's pretty clear that you can't turn a trans person cis through any kind of social intervention (or vice versa, though only one direction has been tried at scale). Being trans, like being gay, is correlated with certain indicators of prenatal hormone fluctuations. But, It's generally believed that there's probably no one reason a person may be trans. To my personal experience, I thought i would feel better if my body was more woman shaped than man shaped, and it turned out to be true. My hobbies are definitely more male typical than female typical. If there were no social norms around gender, I would have transitioned 20 years earlier.

You're just gonna have to accept that there is some sort of internal concept of gender that doesn't have anything to do with social roles. We know this because trans people report this. Many people have come to the same conclusion you have because they haven't ever had to think about their internal sense of gender, but it is simply not correct. I don't think we fully understand why people have an internal sense of gender but they just do.

If you're looking for scientific explanation of gender and how it works and where it comes from you'll have to do a lot of academic reading because it's extremely complicated and there are different legitimate ways of approaching it. Lots of people argue that gender is a system of performance based on social roles that were essentially mandatory before industrialization made it possible for people who give birth to children to not have to breast feed them until they have strong enough teeth to eat on their own, which seems to be somewhat integrated into human psyche in ways that are intermingled with biological sex in some people and somewhat separate from biological sex in others. Gender dysphoria is a pretty large range of experiences based on who you're speaking to and the cultural context they already exist in. There's a lot less queer solidarity (in the west at least) in the internet age and tons of these types of communities violently implode or split apart based on technicalities that are often pretty immaterial when it comes to the question of liberation and equality, and that makes it kinda hard to get a good understanding of gender at all as a cis person on the outside who hasn't done a great deal of research. The shortest answer you can get comes down to the fact that gender being a social construct doesn't mean that it's not also a part of human evolution in complex ways that are difficult to explain to a cis person in a world where we're unable to actually gather quantitative data on human perceptive experiences and social settings and the structure and functionality of the brain and all sorts of other things. Also important is to remember that the fixation on genitals that cis people envision when they think about trans people is most certainly not representative of trans people as a whole, or even of a strong majority. There are plenty of trans people who never get bottom surgery and don't feel all that strongly about the matter, and there are plenty who want it desperately and get it as soon as they can, and lots of people in between. The cis/hetero imagination of sex and sexuality also tends to be pretty limited and strictly enforced by white christian social values that aren't exactly in strong alignment with the practices of humanity from what we can see of indigenous cultures across the world and just ended up spreading everywhere as a result of colonization and imperialism. You can probably see how wide-ranging and all-consuming a question of fundamental human social roles can become in a world with billions of people in it and 5000 years of history and 200000 years of pre-history. I'd probably wear skirts or whatnot, whatever the standard garb is, without feeling much about it one way or the other. That probably results in my not really being able to directly relate to the experience of feeling that one is in the wrong sexed body (while being cognizant that it is a very real and valid thing). It's just like, I'm me and for me, my sex is about as important to my identity as my eye color. Brains are weird.

I recently learned I don’t understand generic medicines and insurance as well as I thought. I take a daily Flovent inhaler for asthma. Apparently the manufacturer GSK put out an “authorized generic” in 2022. My insurance kept filling with the name brand. Now in 2024 they are stopping selling the name brand entirely to force people to use the generic. Apparently this is causing a lot of problems because insurance was covering the name brand but won’t cover the generic and people have to switch to a new drug. Can anyone explain this? I thought generics were made by a competitor and that insurance usually wanted people to be on them?

Non-answer, but yeah that seems goofy, cause generics are usually cheaper too? I have a prescription where my insurance only covers the generic, unless the generic is unavailable due to shortages, then they'll cover a non-generic.

# ? Mar 4, 2024 16:18 |

The explanation is probably just something along the lines of "insurance can make more money by not covering it at all" and telling the customers to get bent if they don't like it. Insurance doesn't really operate on industrial capitalist practices or anything where you have to deliver results in order to make money, it's just a social scheme of extraction by moving around numbers on a computer to justify an ever less comprehensive mode of coverage while extracting continually rising profits from vulnerable people. If the goal was to offer health coverage then you're correct that they'd prefer people to take generics over name brands, but the goal is more to make money and sometimes that just means not covering something at all and not even needing to justify it.

I also think that the assumption that the American healthcare insurance industry is in any way efficient or rational is not entirely based in reality.

You could grow your own chocolate if you have a greenhouse and are able to keep the conditions good all year round but it's not a small plant and I can't imagine it'd be easy. The conditions for cocoa plants don't really exist naturally in the US, they need a ton of water and warm temperature all year and shelter from strong wind. Finland has a candy company called Fazer, and they have a greenhouse that grows cacao trees in their plant and as part of the tour. It's definitely possible it's just, as has been said, not super economical given the amount of cacao you need to grow for industrial chocolate manufacturing.

My sister and I own some property out of state (we’re in the US) that we’re looking to sell. We’ve gotten two letters from land buyers who want to buy our property, but we wonder if their offers are low. Is there a different route we could take to sell the land? It’s only land, there’s no house or anything on it.

If they're unsolicited letters my guess is the offer is low and preying on people who Need Cash Now. At least that's how the cash4houses industry is. At bare minimum you could list it and get a real estate lawyer to handle the contract end for a low fee. Or hire a listing real estate agent to do all the listing etc for a substantially higher fee. You can probably get a lot of more experienced advice in the BFC house buying thread.

Failing that check your local Facebook market or similar.

Value is not a property innate to objects, it's what other people are willing to give you for the thing. So you look for comparable objects being sold, see what their prices are, compare their product to yours to decide whether yours should be worth more or less than theirs, then throw all that research out and make a number up that you think you can get for it.
