Got half way through Spaceman and got bored. Even Paul Dano as a weird space spider couldn't do it for me. I've read Blindsight and nobody will do space spiders better than that.

Someone told me the concept of those spiders and it was a super cool idea. will have to check it out. thought they were part of Tchaikovsky's Children trilogy originally. I enjoyed Andy Weirs' book Hail Mary which I'm guessing Spaceman burrowed heavily from was better than The Martian imo. and the alien was super interesting Durf has issued a correction as of 06:41 on Mar 5, 2024 |

i watched the wire s01 e07 because of the thread and i liked how the limited bust actually backfires because it didnt occur to the cops that there were other plausible reasons they could pinch the driver aside from the wire so that not doing so ended up being more suspicious than if theyd just gone all the way s01 e06 was actually the last one i saw months ago maybe someday someone will discuss a random slur that appears in the eighth episode so ill watch that one too

My partner has gotten deep into Law and Order series and so I'm having her watch The Wire cuz it matches up in timeline and content she likes. She's never seen it and has only vague awareness of it. We're not even halfway through Season 1 and she loves Wallace, Bubbles, and Lester and most of the time Kima, but nobody else. I think we sometimes forget in hindsight how quickly and consistently the main cast are established as enormous gently caress ups and pieces of poo poo, and that it's not very sympathetic to the system. It's still pretty lib and could be even harsher on the cops, but I think a lot of "The Wire is poo poo" backlash comes from it being adopted by libs and the overall cultural impact of Prestige TV. I am not emotionally ready for her to see the end of the Wallace story

I have a small paperbook copy of the 1997 book The Corner by David Simon & Ed Burns, which talks about the effects of the War on Drugs & Baltimore drug trade. Of note is a section of how specific law enforcement policies have ruined a generation of policing skills and the community. I took photos of the relevant pages with my crappy phone & hands, as I couldn't find the relevant book excerpt, so apologies for the quality. Click on the linked image to view a larger copy. The last three links are on the exact topic below, the other ones are about the dehumanising of drug addiction, hard line sentencing for all drug crimes & police brutality at a certain district. Anyway, thanks to the War on Drugs, police now get extra court pay for any arrests, no matter how minor: this includes arresting local drug addicts for "Loitering In A Drug Free Zone" (marked with helpful signs covering a very large radius). Not only does finding one vial of heroin on the local with a drug addiction give you extra court pay as you have to then just hang around until a judge processes their case, it officially counts as a "Drug Arrest" and towards your anti-drug stats. Simon & Burns note that not only is this pointless, but it has ruined a generation of police officers, who legitimately don't know how to write a search warrant or check it's actually the right address, or learn how to fill out a proper investigation form so it's not thrown out in court, or know how to do covert surveillance, because why bother? You make less money actually serving your community & get yelled at for not achieving your "drug arrests" doing those things, so why not make a local addict turn out his pockets & arrest him for being within 50ft of a sign? This was in 1997, so imagine how much worse things have gotten since then. https://ibb.co/K0cv6Wz https://ibb.co/10bYqjM https://ibb.co/fNCtS0v https://ibb.co/3RG3L3N https://ibb.co/Hgj4kSq https://ibb.co/PwmjGMN https://ibb.co/VMWzV8q https://ibb.co/JHQLChZ https://ibb.co/Pmcy7r6 https://ibb.co/Zmsfy3g https://ibb.co/FDrW5cH Livo has issued a correction as of 11:58 on Mar 5, 2024 |

The beauty of The Wire is you can watch it and then go to Netflix's The Crown and every time Charles looks cross or sullen you can just fill in "The gently caress did I do?" And assume it's him reacting to killing his wife.

The purpose of a system is what it does is a pretty useful way of looking at cybernetic capitalism, considering the kind of people who put together the war on drugs it seems hard for me to disagree that it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Making police into stupid armed thugs that don't know how to enforce the rules as written, hence degrading the importance of the old ruleset, seems pretty well in line with the project of increasing police power and oppressing and brutalizing vulnerable people and keeping them stuck in poverty and addiction, as is one of the main functions of the police in the late capitalist state. Also those teenagers getting mad about a movie where white people manipulate and betray a society of Muslims because they casted white people to do it are always going to be around, they are the result of insufficient education in meaningful anti capitalist thought. Still good for demonstrating the magnitude of the task facing anyone in the west who might be interested in ever trying to improve anything.
