That's really interesting, thanks.

If Kentuckians are schooled in Kentucky as opposed to out of state school, is there a more polished accent?

I'm sure any amount of moving around in childhood would change one's accent. If you want to hear a baseline Kentucky accent, listen to a clip of Mitch McConnell from the 90s. If you want a distinct regional accent to compare to, listen to Al Gore, (which I'd say is standard Tennessee). You don't really hear either accent that strongly in today's speakers from the region except again in certain words, and since the advent of the internet it's much rarer to come across strong examples than it was.

It's extremely rare in my experience to hear a voice like Tom's which has that professional radio voice tone with a very specific regional accent. Even in Lexington where he lives now he'd be pegged as an outsider from southeastern Kentucky specifically.

Also a true southerner would describe Tom's accent as Appalachian, separate and distinct from their region. Similar to how someone from Michigan and Minnesota sound similar to a southerner but neither would consider the other to even be regionally similar.

regional accents rule, and they are disappearing. when I was a child I could tell the difference between southern, eastern and western Iowa accents. those differences are all disappearing.

I have a few books on Canadian English and it unironically breaks my heart. We used to be a real country but boomers are addicted to television.

I could swear I was reading an essay about how Pygmalion was received in the US, and how the idea of being able to pick out someone's class and place of birth by accent made Americans in the audience uncomfortable, but I can't find it. I've heard that when they cast My Fair Lady on Broadway they choose the broadest, most exaggerated, cockney accent possible and there's no real effort by the actors for them to be accurate and consistent, which is also kind of interesting.

The combo of toms voice, his calm demeanor, and some of his word choice /vocab are so pleasant to listen to. Very chill

I was listening to something -- I think the britainology elisode about 7 up -- that discussed how Britons' accents has supposedly got thicker between the 70s and today. maybe the English are built different.

Are there any good papers or books about like the epistemology of 'conspiracies'? like how particular events become marginalized as 'conspiracies' in the first place and associated with schizo methies, how communication is used to reify as a cultural joke, how enough just information gets disseminated and undergoes diaspora in a sort of 'back-channel' way and how that even gets picked up, and how perception of or receptiveness of them to the masses changes and why it changes?
