just dont be loving stupid about it, don't try to walk out the store with a big screen tv or other big ticket items.

stick to like 10-15% of the total bill and dont go to the same Target everyday for a month and you can shave a nice chunk off your grocery bill

aren't some places just keeping a running tally of a person shoplifting via store cameras/self check out records, and once it hits $500 then going after them?

This is what Target does specifically (let's you get away with it while documenting a case until it's felony territory) but others probably also

With facial recognition and other tracking tech it's probably trivial these days

Either way, you're years behind. I don't remember the last time I had to actually insert my card into the machine. Everything's tap and go, except for the handful of small businesses still accepting cash only.

Yeah even small mom and pop places have tap to pay, sorry you don't get to be smugly superior to America about payment systems anymore, just about literally everything else.

Where do you live? Australia still has ATM fees too except for 4 banks.

And they're trying real hard to push people off cash here, too. Like cashless is meant to be a good thing? lmao

Yeah, the ones that have ATMs everywhere and accept cards from any other bank. If you're still paying ATM fees... why?

The perception of the US as a frozen in time cash/check/card signature nightmare is what's outdated now since funnily enough they fixed their poo poo right before Covid. They even have parcel boxes now, with app support and everything, walking through a major city you can almost feel like it's the late 00s

Then you look in the background and see that all of this is still bolted onto decaying infrastructure

Still lots of tax-dodging restaurants here in Boston that are cash only. Also because credit card processors are skimming 2-3% off of every transaction.

Everything is tap to pay here when they do accept cards; we've replaced all machines with the chip system at least 5 years ago.

How the gently caress do you "pay by tapping"? Tapping what?

Is this one of those things where you have to have a smartphone and apps? Like when places have a barcode to scan instead of a menu, and my phone won't do it and the waitresses get annoyed and I never go back again?

Your card has a chip in it and you tap the chip spot on the card against the swiper thing at the register

If you try to use the magstripe most of the machines here are set up to tell you "no idiot use the chip or tap to pay" and will only let you use the magstripe as a fallback if those fail

Trying to lead a middle-aged life. Well, it's either that or drop dead.

In the US, there’s a little logo on your card if you can tap to pay, it looks like )))) except they go from small on one end to large on the other end.

It seems like most banks and credit unions add the capability when they reissue your card but don’t tell anybody that it exists. I use Square to accept credit cards in my business, and their little reader has been accepting tap-to-pay for years, and I’m still blowing peoples’ minds when they can just tap their card to pay me.

Cashless means that there is a middleman for every transaction, the banks think that that's a great thing

the actual reason they want everything to be cashless is that it means homeless people are no longer living "off the grid" and still have to have some form of monthly payment (like a cell phone) to allow them to interact with civilization in the most basic ways, like obtaining food

Like many things in our society, I don't think the CEO of Visa is rubbing his hands together thinking about how great it will be to gently caress over the homeless or whatever, it's just a fun side effect as they add middlemen and transaction fees to everything.

yeah other countries can still be smug about our money infrastructure.

lol it's not the fact that we finally have the technology in place that actually matters, it's the fact that they've made every piece of technology a middleman. it costs everyone at every step of the process a percentage of your money just to be able to use it.
