Man I must say, Javier really took over the whole scene in all the scenes he was in and Zendayas portrayal might be one of the greatest decisions Denis has done in Dune, and he has done some truly terrific decisions.
All in all, Dune 2 is probably one of the greatest sequels ever made and I can't wait to see it again soon (we saw it on Imax, in the absolute front and it was An Experience)

Ah. Along with all the cool spacing guild stuff too, I assume. Still, film ruled!

After making that I imagine Denis had to sit and eat just an absolute loving MOUNTAIN of food, a confusingly massive meal, to get his strength back.

It's a shame it's too late for Oscar season, it's audio shits all over every other film ever. Just incredible sound design, editing, mixing, score, da woiks.

Well just got done watching it and I really enjoyed it but it still felt incredibly rushed, Denis decides to make the plot happen in one calendar year because he didn’t want to deal with a child actor for Alia?

My son came away from the movie thinking that Jessica is super evil, so that was kind of heh.

here are some things I was thinking about on the rewatch

in the room where the water of life is produced, there are two circular pools, one of sand and one of water, which sit side-by-side. when paul enters the facility, he enters from the sand pool side, in which the sandtrout has caused the pool to become shifting and uneven. when he takes the water of life and enters a coma, he is positioned in between the pools. when jessica meets him alone later, paul is sitting at the edge of the water pool, and the pool is still and clear.

additionally, the room is framed with the sand on the right and the water on the left. in cinema, moving from left of frame to right of frame is generally associated with progression, positivity, goodness, and moving forward. paul moves from right to left.

Thinking about it more making the final fight with Feyd an honorable showing of equal skill kinda annoys me, did they think a knife up through the skull wouldn’t get a PG13 rating anymore?

Paul’s knife wound went pretty deep but he’s totally fine because he can now control his body to the cellular level to speed up healing but the non book audience doesn’t know anything about that.

Now it would of worked if they spent anytime displaying Feyd’s skill but they showed him fighting drugged dudes and struggling a bit against a normal soldier (I presume)

Having the entire story happen during a 7-8 month period of time doesn’t work for me personally, everything else was very good, BR2049 remains Denis’s best film however.

ridley scott blamed 2049 being a bust on it being too long and thought that villaneuve should've cut half an hour off of it. dune definitely is strongly, strongly influenced by this advice. he cut. he cut hard.

this is not even a narrative issue so much as a theater logistics issue. fit more screenings in, basically

That's kind of an important part of Feyd. He's not actually that skilled. He's not a complete dumbass but the first time we see him fight in the book he smugly goes "lol, gonna fight an un-drugged guy to prove how cool and awesome I am" and then ends up having to resort to a secret code work to paralyze the soldier so he didn't loving die. In his duel against Paul, Paul realizes that Feyd also has a trigger put there by the BG and considers using it, but ultimately wins on his own skill.

Like that's the entire point. Feyd has some skill but it's overstated because he fights almost universally in situations where he's able to manipulate things so he's not at any significant risk. In the duel against Paul he's only a risk at all because of a poisoned dagger and poisoned needle, neither of which helps him and so he gets a knife to the brain.

I know it's the more correct way to pronounce it (both Herbert-wise and Finnish-wise), but every time the family of schemers is brought up, I can't help but think, "Hearkening to hear you." har-CONE-enn just sounds so much better to me.

Also, the movie needed to decide on whether Paul's father was Duke LET-oh or LEET-oh; I caught both pronunciations in part 2.

The emperor is living there. emperor Paul-Muad’dib Atreides.

The old guy didn’t live there because, basically, none of the nobles grasped the true importance of the spice and Arrakis before Paul did. The spacing guild (not appearing in this movie, the orange-masked guys who escorted the emperor’s herald to Caladan in the first movie) understood, but were scared of the potential backlash if they moved to take direct control of galactic politics rather than manipulating it from the shadows.

Spice is immensely and unbelievably powerful, powerful enough to the point where nobody could imagine it being threatened. The idea that someone like Paul might come in and threaten to end Spice as a thing never occurred to anyone, so Dune instead had more value as being something that could be given as a gift or taken as a punishment and where you could drive whoever owned it to the brink by demanding and heavier spice taxes.

Prior to Paul it just made more sense to give Dune to a Great House because even the *worst* possible outcome was "they gently caress up Spice need to be replaced" and not "We end human space travel and send everyone addicted to Spice into a special kind of hell"

No, it’s in the original book. It’s because the Harkonnens held Arrakis in quasi-fief (ie, the emperor just let them run the place for him and pocket some of the money), whereas the Atreides held it in fief-complete (ie, it’s theirs in perpetuity, a deal too good to turn down and therefore the ideal bait for the emperor to wipe them out)
