Moore and Frank Miller (pause for lols) were for a long-assed time the only comic book writers who got held up as capital-A Artists within the medium. I cannot count the times I remember seeing the headline "Pow! Zoom! Comics Aren't Just For Kids Anymore!" and the article would inevitably lean on Watchmen and DKR as the prime examples of "serious, adult comics."

The push to adapt these works id, I think at least, really indicative of unexamined cognitive dissonance within certain comics enthusiasts and their desire for legitimacy - The idea of comics being made into movies as a sign of their legitimacy which inadvertently delegitimizes comics as a medium.

So I've actually long been a proponent of the idea of comics as literature in the sense that I think it's a medium capable of telling impactful stories in ways that other mediums can't, and I want to see the artform grow and evolve. However, in my escapades in online comics spaces I've realized that there's another contingent within the "comics as literature" discussion who have a somewhat different agenda - Fans of Marvel and DC superhero comics, or other stories traditionally seen as consumerist, mass market or otherwise "low art" (If you'll pardon my french) who desperately want the things they already like to be seen as legitimate by the mainstream. This second camp isn't necessarily concerned so much with seeing the medium of comics used to tell more nuanced and complex stories so much as they want to be taken seriously for being really into Batman, and I think it's the existence of this second contingent that leads to stuff like The Killing Joke or Watchmen or TDKR getting so much attention as "comics that aren't just for kids anymore" because these are cases of writers within the Marvel/DC space doing slightly more challenging things with the medium but still staying firmly within the comfort zone of the mainstream comics fans.

Sort of like when gamers really wanted to insist Bioshock Infinite was True Art to prove Roger Ebert wrong.

Sort of like when gamers really wanted to insist Bioshock Infinite was True Art to prove Roger Ebert wrong.

People trying to force something to be "recognized" as Art usually fail because, like you said, they're working backwards. Alan Moore wants to tell gritty dark stories with cool characters, he doesn't want to be seen as an "Artist" on par with Da Vinci or Cervantes. His work can have merit certainly, but it's a different entity.

Bioshock Infinite was the same. People were desperate for there to be something they could point at and say "See, it's Art!", and ended up choosing something that only barely had a minimal "serious" story line, while completely ignoring multiple titles from the past which could more easily be pointed at as having artistic merit. Even worse, there seemed to be this requirement that, for something in either comics or games (and to a lesser extent literature and cinema) to be considered "Art", it must also have been commercially successful. So the indie scene got completely ignored.

Thankfully we now have Disco Elysium and the question of "Is Games Art?" has been answered with "Yes, They is".

The first half of Infinite is fun from a fiasco sort of standpoint and then the second half is exceedingly boring until the ending twists happen. The last thing you do game wise is just a lovely wave based horde mode.

I love how the Art of War has like 3 stages of understanding to it:

1) This is one of the most important books ever written.
2) This poo poo is just the most obvious tips on how to not gently caress things up. One of the lessons is literally "If you're thinking of loving up, don't"!
3) Oh, it's basic and obvious because it was written for horrifically disconnected Royal Courtesans who had never left the palace and didn't understand things like "You need to actually pay and feed your army".

Disco Elysium is a fun idea for a game that couldn't hold my attention sadly. But I'm not against that being done in another type of game that I would enjoy. Would love to explore a booby trapped ruin or Resident Evil mansion and have my sense of smell warn me that a bunch of spikes are about to shoot out of a bookcase or something.

the art of war is a good text for understanding the basics of warfare and is incredibly important but, it is also designed to be the basics of warfare presented in an easily digestible manner. its something everyone who might possibly be adjacent to command of troops was expected to understand. its the ancient chinese equivalent of a high school math book. but like, the first high school math book ever written was pretty important.
