Russia has killed what, half? as many civilians in over 2 years as Israel did in 2 months?

Everyone in Gaza died because Hamas used them as human shields (while the world’s most moral army wept over their tragic deaths) while fewer Ukrainians have been killed because their heroic army used superior western technology to protect them (while Russian orcs raged at not being able to slaughter more people). Non westerners are too stupid to understand this quite simple difference.

I just mean that since the military deaths are fully made up and change to fit the weekly PR push I dunno if I believe the civilian numbers either but I won’t lie and say I’ve done a lot of research on it

Both sides have some motivation to hide military deaths, but they have motivations to share civilian deaths, because it makes the other side look bad. It's possible I suppose that civilian deaths in territory held by Russia are being undercounted because of a lack of access.

The reporting from earlier by the Russian MoD is not to far off Mediazone's reporting once you take into account Wagner and the previously seperate LPDR & DPDR casualties. I haven't checked recently.

Soon as you forcibly conscript them they are not civilians any more so it is indeed good and cool when casualties happen.

Ukrainian lodges protest against a conscription officer by hitting him with his car, then lodges a second protest aided by an axe and a guy on a horse with his own axe. There's a brief view of Ukrainian soldiers that are just standing around and filming.

This is an entirely rational response to men coming to your village with the intent of sending you and your fellow villagers to their deaths.

i'm guessing this is another casualty of relying too much on defeating the btg because ukraine focused on making as many maneuver units as possible who inevitably cannibalize their engineer formations for infantry after trying to overwhelm a motor rifle divison's targeting too many times?

There's also a tension in Combat Engineer units where there's a lot of insecurity about building stuff and many of them invest their training cycles into being elite breacher demo charge "basically infantry", rather than using backhoes, bulldozers, and installing bridges.

The GWOT, naturally kicked that into overdrive. They got chewed up by IEDs and I think morale was held together by being super hooah.

This could be a CW thing because we used to have Infantry Pioneers that were consolidated into the Sappers and Miners, so there's two different engineering traditions rolled together in the 90's.

e: Just like Ranger tabs, getting a US Sapper tab from being sent on one of their courses is something I've noticed the engineers do more often since the 2010's.

just this morning I was reading about how the big reason why Omaha Beach was such a close-run thing was that the Amis refused to heed British advice to use lots of engineering vehicles - flail tanks, armored bulldozers, ramp carriers, and those incredible Churchill AVREs with the gigantic spigot mortar. And what few tanks they did have, which was only two-thirds as much as the British/Commonwealth assault divisions had, were almost all sunk because of a bad order to let them swim 6,000 yards to shore

so you get a lot of stories about waves of infantry braving German MG fire and the sergeant yelling at you to GET THOSE BANGALORES! so they can blow a hole in the concrete barriers - but the need for that sort of "bravery" was entirely avoidable if the Yanks had decided to actually use armor instead of having engineers break apart fortifications on foot

EDIT: more broadly this "Stopping the Panzers" book is turning me into a D-Day truther - the Brits did their landings much more competently and emerged victorious over much tougher odds because they did the planning and did the staff work and allocated all the firepower they needed. Getting Montypilled.
