ytv did have regular dragonball though, i have a very vivid memory of it being 1995 and seeing goku turn into the oozaru at an insanely early timeslot, like 6 am or something on a saturday

I could be misremembering but didn't Sailor Moon play on Global at some point before YTV picked it up? We had two TVs in the house and only one of them had satellite but I remember watching Sailor Moon with early morning cartoons on the TV that only got local stuff.

So I can't speak for every Global market but I do remember for BC Global didn't air Sailor Moon

yeah, they definitely started slotting it in the mid/late 90s. i distinctly remember being weirded out since i'd only ever been exposed to DBZ so everything being so light and goofy was some real whiplash from what seemed like serious drama to my child brain

I was trying to remember whether I saw og dragonball on ytv or teletoon at a ridiculous hour and this wiki page confirms it was 1996 ytv. didnt know that they dubbed and aired the rest of the series in 2003 though. sailor moon was still the first on the network but the twelve episodes of og dragonball weren’t that much later. also completely forgot that ytv had keroppi

Looked it up and I believe it was Fox Kids that played it. I'm not sure if there was some partnership deal with Canadian broadcasters in Ontario but they played a lot of Saban Entertainment shows like Power Rangers and The New Addams Family (and I think some Ocean Dub DBZ as well) and also Sailor Moon.

for me my lasting childhood ytv dub memory is the preamble to the monster-of-the-episode analysis on monster rancher. get a disk, take the risk. spin it fast, through the past. unlock it, claim it. you can tame it. unlock your disk.

japan often gets superhero movies months earlier than north america, they’ll probably have deadpool & wolverine (with hugh jackman!) screening there already. similarly, the toho cinemas in shinjuku with the huge godzilla head on top has one of the nicest screens in the entire country - it would be a really unique experience to see timothee chalamet killing it in dune 2 there. for information and showtimes for both, google logan paul japan

fascinating. Amano is one of the all-time greats but he does tend to "quote" other tv/film composers pretty liberally -- off the top of my head, Giant Robo's "Rush! Isshei and Youshi!" is an almost 1:1 lift of Alfred Newman's title track for "How the West was Won"

There is a lot of "borrowing" in anime soundtracks. My favourite is that one track in Evangelion which is extremely close to the victory theme from You Only Live Twice. I can't remember what the track is called but if you listen to this you will know the one I mean.

The YTV dub of Dragonball was also syndicated in the US, because it showed up on KBHK in San Francisco at a time when that channel was a well of obscure programming airing at odd hours.

It's the only reason I've had the faintest interest in DB, and I'm only interested in it if Goku's a kid and/or it seems less hyper-testosterone than the episodes that have gotten the property unlicensed print shirts next to 2pac covers at every outlet mall t-shirt stand. (It sounds tropey as gently caress, but DBZ is so established as ultra masculine muscle men shouting while exploding that it turns me off. Even though I watched like twelve episodes of the original show and liked it before DBZ hit cable.)

To that end, I was actually gonna give the upcoming series a chance. RIP. Did not expect Toriyama to leave us before Miyazaki.

i wouldnt really describe dbz as hyper masculine tbh. like theres a lot of muscle and explosions and punching sure but a lot of the lessons and morals it focuses on arent really like, western action movie style stuff. like gohans big power up moment is crying because of how much he and a dead robot both loved birds.

dragonball z's overall tone isn't actually that different from og dragonball beyond hewing closer to the latter half of it rather than the parts where it's making tons of jokes about underwear and genitals. if anything very, very early dragonball is significantly more juvenile

They usually have One Piece and, surprisingly, Hunter x Hunter as well.

Getting a Boba drink in a tourist resort a few weeks ago, one of the nice older gift shops was replaced with a very temporary looking stand hocking shirts, and I saw Vegeta juxtaposed next to the phrase, "I'm no weatherman but you're due for a few inches tonight."

goku when he wasn't in a battle to the death was also a genuinely pleasant and respectful (if somewhat dopey) guy. he powered up and got big muscles to help and protect others because he's a good person and not to exert dominance or whatever

the full tonal transition from very early og dragonball to what the rest of the series is closer to happens a little bit after goku spends several chapters fighting a misogynistic gay pedophile. this is not one of the most beloved battles of the dragonball franchise. then tao appears and the action gets badass

I think what it really comes down to is I'm not a fan of the style of sharp gleaming, almost plasticine looking Ken doll muscles that is probably not as common in actual 1980s DBZ as it is in more recent works when later artists began iterating on Toriyama's original style. I suppose being gay (and a teenager at the time) possibly means I am paying undue attention when buff guys walk around shirtless. I never wanted to see DB people half naked, but to his credit he did at least give them nipples, which seems to be almost pornographic to most mangaka.

That combined with the crazy eyed wide-jawed screaming and sweating between hyper beams and super fast punching feels so different from the "let's go on a road trip adventure with this kid whose potential is almost unlimited" show that I saw a dozen episodes of. Goku was JUST learning the kamehameha from Roshi before it was replaced with Mighty Max reruns.

Toriyama's art definitely took a turn i didn't like in the 90s, when he started doing specular highlights on everything that made it look plastic + using markers instead of watercolors for illustration + drawing everybody with huge lantern jaws. Saiyan-saga era Goku is perfect; not overly-detailed or angular but still looks like he could kick your rear end

it was cool seeing how even into the last decade he was still changing his style up and experimenting, softening his characters' features back up, incorporating digital color techniques into his workflow. it sucks that we'll never know what his art would have looked like 10 years out...
