I'm not going to bother looking up the exact source but I remember reading a story or tweet or whatever of a trans person meeting Pratchett at a signing decades ago and introducing themselves with with their deadname at first (because they hadn't transitioned fully yet iirc?) but asking him to sign it to their chosen name. When asked why they told him they thought they were trans but were still in the process and that was what their true name was going to be. Terry replied along the lines of "Well, I'm honored to have been one of the first people to meet the real you." :3:

Terry Pratchett isn't just one of my favourite authors. He's one of my favourite people, up there with saints like Mr. Rogers. Truly #blessed.

I still use his audiobooks (Celia Imrie, Nigel Planer and Stephen Briggs are amazing, they really capture the tone and humor of the books. I don't know how I feel about the new ones yet, it feels overly produced and I don't like how they do the footnotes) to fall asleep to almost every night because they're engaging enough to quiet my ADHD mind, while also being familiar enough to be able to nod off to without missing too much, and every time I discover new jokes, new insights, have a new appreciation for clever or beautiful phrasing, etc.

Watching his documentary on assisted dying broke my heart, knowing what was coming, but it was also really well done and beautiful.

If I'm remembering the same encounter as you, it was this:

I think he was also asked at some point about how he felt about his having trans fans, and he said something along the lines of 'I don't generally inquire into the details of my friends genitalia, so...'
Also, anyone familiar with his whole body of work knows that a constantly repeated theme is that it is up to the individual to decide who they are, and that no one is required to fulfill the circumstances of their birth.

The only thing I don't like about the Pratchett estate is that they won't put out a complete Discworld set.

I would buy one for me and all of my friends!

Seriously. Are they allergic to getting the new generation hooked? Just sell some box sets of the Watch, the Witches, Death, Industrial, odds and ends, etc. if they think a 41 book set is too much.

I copied you and did the same thing last night. I've listened to the older LOTR audiobooks a lot and also DVD commentary tracks (I recommend John Carpenter commentaries). Basically any relaxed chatter. Discworld will be my new go-to.

I've read/listened to a couple of them in the past properly.

It is absurd for transphobes to insist no one thought about trans issues until the last few years. It's like they fail the theory of mind test, it wasn't on my radar therefore it wasn't on anyone's radar.

This was on american TV in 1986, about events that happened in the 70s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Serve

quote:

Plot
In 1976, Renée Richards is on the tennis court as a professional tennis player. The film flashes back to 1964, when Renée Richards is an eye surgeon named Richard Radley (both roles played by Redgrave). Radley has a successful career and a fiancée, but secretly cross-dresses at night. Unable to speak with his mother Sadie (Louise Fletcher), who is a psychiatrist, Radley consults his own psychiatrist, Dr. Beck (Martin Balsam), who advises him to grow a beard. This strategy works temporarily until Radley is drafted into the Navy, which does not allow beards. Following his discharge and a failed marriage, Radley undergoes gender reassignment surgery and becomes Renée.

Renée relocates to California, resumes her career as a surgeon and begins dating. After playing in a local tennis tournament in La Jolla, Renée is outed as transgender by a television reporter. In the ensuing controversy, Renée takes the United States Tennis Association to court, where she secures her right to play professional tournament tennis as a woman without being subjected to chromosome testing.

It was a pretty big deal, I heard about it as a kid in Canada. I get that this particular story might not have made it across the pond, but I seriously doubt america was the only country where this sort of thing was happening 40-50 years ago.

Trans people didn't burst into existence in the last 10 years. :psyduck:

My dad was a big fan of the album “Switched on Bach” by Wendy Carlos. He told me that he and my mom listened to it a lot when I was in utero. When I got a little bit older, he explained to me that Wendy Carlos was a woman who was born a man. He told me this in a very matter-of-fact way without any judgment. I grew up thinking that this was just a thing that happened to some people. For reference, I was born in 1969.

Yeah, John Wojtowicz ostensibly did it to pay for his lover, Elizabeth Eden, to have gender-affirming surgery. The truth is a bit murkier - it’s alleged he really did it to pay debts he owed to the mob - but he did take part of his share from selling the film rights and give it to her for the surgery. But after that she married someone else and didn’t have a lot to do with him until she succumbed to AIDS-related pneumonia in 1987. There was a pretty good documentary made about the movie and the robbery called The Dog back in 2013.

Wonder how many beaver die per year trapped under their own felled trees.

It's got to be a considerable number I'd think. Given their frequency of dangerously cutting down trees.

They are small and very close to the trunk. Normally the tree has a bunch of branches so the heavy part of the trunk isn't going to be very close to where the beaver stands.
