That's because that kit was made in a time when men were men, if you got a cut you spat on it and hoped your arm didn't fall off and you couldn't actually make full units from boxes sold by GW.

Am I crazy or isn't it that you can put fewer dudes in a squad of 20 (or whatever big size) to make room for boxes of weird numbers?

Not that I think anyone is going to complain about fewer enemy models for the same points but well, someone probably will.

Prior to 10th you paid per model. In 10th you just pay per discrete grouping of models per unit (ie you pay for 5 man or 10 man squads, you can run 9 dudes but you pay for 10 regardless).

A lot of the "weirdness" for 10th is because wargear is free so you don't pay per model anymore and unit loadouts are (mostly) restricted to whatever is available in the box. This particularly owns Space Marines because their old design ethos is that a Space Marine is a master of all forms of warfare and can be equipped with anything to kill whatever you want. Vanguard Veterans for example had the option of Chainswords (lol), Power Swords (useless), Power Axe (also), Power Mauls (again), Power Fists (alright), Lightning Claws (very good) and Thunder Hammers (also very good). And then in the other hand they can choose from one of 5 different Pistols or a Storm Shield. Note that you only got 4 shields, 4 thunder hammers, 4 pairs of lightning claws and 1 of each other melee weapon per box so you still get hosed and have to buy more boxes or source extra bits or buy third party.

There's a lot of "people" (if you can call Marine players that) really invested in like, finely tweaking the loadout of all their dudes with their personally satisfying proportions of everything even though none of it has ever mattered in gameplay. It's probably the biggest divide between People Who Play and People Who List Build and most people in the former like 10th and all in the latter hate 10th (even though they may have played like, One Game).

Though the new box is likely to be 10 to a box and maybe more expensive too, so you may be better grabbing the current box while you can.

The 16 man boxes are generally from a time where the heavy weapons options where sold separately in metal. So a box of 16 and 2 clampacks of heavy weapons would get you to 1 unit of 20 or 2 of 10. Course when they started that in the early 2000s, the box of 16 was $24 and the clamshells were $8 apiece.

im having a hard time enjoying my games of Warhammer lately. i was enjoying CSM but listbuilding with them feels absolutely terrible now. I was almost relieved because every game i played i would get a lecture about what GW needed to do to nerf the faction.

i switched to my other army, drukhari, and while they’re fun, theyre a shitload of work to play & transport and i still get complaints and play that i consider unsporting. before i start my movement ill say oh hey your dude is touching the ruin so i can see him did you mean to do that? or if someone is moving up to charge a fights first unit ill remind them that they don’t want to do that.

my opponents about 50% of the time politely reciprocate and the other half take the advantage and run with it while not extending the same courtesy. had a game vs Orks, a teammate of mine! At an RTT! where i warned him twice not to charge my solitaire with fights first. he said oh thanks i forgot. i told him at the start of the game I hadn’t played against Orks in a year so just please remind me of your rules as we go, and after i moved and charged a whole bunch of poo poo to overkill an ork boy blob in the middle he said cool im gonna fight on death. i could have just sent the solitaire in to assasinate his characters but instead i ended up losing the solitaire and two archon/incubi squads as well as some models from the court. whatever, I take some responsibility, cant win em all, but it left a really rotten taste in my mouth. I stepped back and took a couple month break after that tournament

then last night im playing a casual game against Johnny Ultramarine and the whole time hes whining about my rerolls and its just like, dude, you made no effort to hide Calgar, you used oath of moment on reaver jetbikes TWICE, put all your shooting on one side of the board and wasted a bunch of CP overwatching trying to hit on 6s, maybe clean that up before you start complaining about your rules and my rules. dude also forgot to mention calgar had a 4+++ which caused me to basically throw away my Solitaire and an archon/incubi squad.

maybe it’s me? I don’t mind losing but i really can’t handle being taken advantage of. less annoying but by far more prevalent is having my own good play be marginalized by people complaining about my loving army rules. i have a buddy who always gives me poo poo about playing factions with rules that layer on each other and then plays loving thousand sons. any post-game discussion with him just centers around Reddit-level winrate discussions—if my army has a 54% win rate and his has a 51%, then there’s nothing he could have done in the game to win because my army is Just Better. if he’s playing the better winrate faction then my dice were too good.

idk if I genuinely don’t want to do this anymore or if this is just part of the general malaise I’ve been experiencing.

Sounds like you've played against some real lovely opponents. I'm sorry dude.

I'm real tolerant but the one thing that grinds my gears is complaining about dice rolls and complaining about rules as we're playing.

The dice are random and I didn't write the loving rules, stop ruining my fun by making your inability to deal my problem.

So with the Inquisitorial Agents killteam, is it possible to build all the “alternative” models? I don’t care about the autosavant, really, but would love to have both guardsmen variations. Though I suppose it being playable as a killteam is a secondary consideration

Zero comfort, never used anything like that so I don’t think that would be an option for me. Sounds like I should just buy a second box in the future and make the alternatives I dont make with this one.

The IA has so many models that are just some dudes, my favorite type, it’s too bad a single box can’t maximize that

i wouldn't worry about casting the same body. Basically the uniqueness comes from the arms and heads which are just flat joints for the arms and a ball socket for the head so they're fairly compatible with a lot of other kits. IG dudes or I think there's a little box of necromunda hive scum that wouldn't break the bank too much.

It is kind of a disappointment of a kit because if you did get another box you'd be stuck with two of the autosavent Kind of baffling they wouldn't do a full team

I love blue stuff. You've gotta learn how best to make molds for it to be super effective though.

Some bits you can just wrap the thermoplastic around and pop the bits out easy easy. Others you've got to do separate panels/faces with indents and put them together like you would metal molds.

If you get good results from blue stuff you should really consider making proper molds. I've made a decent number of silicone molds in my time, and struggle to get good results from blue stuff. If you are getting good results with blue stuff I'd bet you'd get perfect castings out of the real deal.

Since mould degradation keeps coming up, how is the Falcon Chassis? I think I'd consider Eldar soon (will I sound super older if I call them that? How well has the name update taken hold?) so does it seem better to get Warp Spinners now or see if there's a refresh? How big was the army update in 9th?

Relatedly, a factor in me pulling the trigger would be new Warp Spiders, do we have any cause to be confident that will happen?

This is why it's so baffling to me coming back to the hobby, having left when there was still a lot of metal in the range, and finding that still have the 2nd ed moulds, they are comfortably one of the three coolest aspects.

Side note, I figure they will need to add an aspect warrior tag to all the sheets, to enable a detachment that specialises in them?

In all likelihood, the sculpts for the plastic molds for all of the aspects were done years ago. They drop one or two per edition. Warp Spiders are an excellent bet for the release with the 9th edition codex. Hopefully they stick close to the original because those are outstanding.

I'd like them to explore some new stuff, but also provide options to make them very much like the originals. Helmet options between the fairly generic ones and new six eyed ones or something.

Yes, we have feathers--but the muscles of men.
I feel like the only things not officially announced that we will probably get are lots of Drukhari stuff (because they stopped selling all their fine cast), Chaos Bikers (because this is the only thing that didn’t come out from the slew of otherwise one hundred percent correct rumors a couple of years back), and a sizable amount of World Eaters and Votann (because they both are undermanned and GW released other armies in two stages in the past, like Sisters). Obviously there will be a bunch more released that’s not that, though. Personally I’m hoping for revamped Grey Knights and some new Deathwatch stuff.
