Also I saw the k-wiss vid on the ~new tech~ of canceling lion heart stance into peakaboo

Asuka players: What's up with this icon under the health bar? Some characters seem to have this now. I looked it up and found a bunch of snarky comments online reading "SOMEONE DIDN'T READ THE PATCH NOTES!!!!!1" So I read the patch notes and found the following: "An icon has been added below the health gauge to indicate whether the Naniwa Gusto has been activated or not" What the hell is Naniwa Gusto? Sounds important.

So the icon in this case says when Claudio has his Starburst buff so he can use his starburst abilities, because otherwise you can only tell by looking at his hand. I think Leroy has one if his one-use cane is available, and I'm pretty sure Bryan has one for when he has his Snake Eyes buff. I've seen Leo has one but hosed if I know what it means for Leo.

Yeah way more characters have weird charged token stuff than I thought. I didn't realize it until the patch hit and now it feels like half the cast has some kind of charge they can get. Ki charge is the one true charge IMO.

THE AWESOME GHOST posted:I came back after a bit of a break and I’m somehow better Funny how that works. I played a bunch earlier tonight after not playing for a week or two and did way better than before. Trying to learn Leroy. I don't think he's that bad, but is kinda hard to play. I find his stance mixup hard to run since you have to time the counter hit launcher. I just do 4, 1+2 instead and that's fine, actually it combos on normal hit, and nobody punishes it at my rank anyway.

Due to mental health stuff, I took a few weeks away from games, and have come back this weekend to give it a go. I decided to pick Steve up (Despite knowing he is beginner friendly OR particularly strong in 8, but I like the achetype) and watched 3 or 4 guides to get some basic ideas. At pre-green ranks I'm at around 20% WR currently (though I'm ok with allowing that, knowing that I have no tekken knowledge or cheese to rely on, so I'm happy I'm going to get battered for a bit), but I want to take baby steps to try and improve and learn fundamental skills. I've got a few things written down to try to work on, but at the moment there's too much overload to try and get it all at once and I have difficulty setting myself small achievable goals. I'm happy to just throw games for a few weeks to practice key skills, and have a list of things that that I could spend time on, but I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on what either the most practical or enjoyable step I should take to learn 8 and Steve. Is it better to simply just practice movement and concentrating on sidestepping, getting distance, and just trying to land jab strings all game and whiff punishing with 1+2 or blocking up and trying to read opponents moves and doing simple punishes at super low levels? I feel like I'm getting hit a lot by not just pressing a button too early or just opponents spamming lows a lot, and my brain hasn't learn the buttons well enough to not flow into panic spam, so I'd rather pick one tactic even if it isn't well rounded, and try to practive that element of the game. His 10/11f punisher is 1,1,2, but has to duck cancel to be safe, and his 12f is either 2, 2 for a simple combo or 2, 1 and either back to go into peakaboo into flicker. Would it be better to just stick to 10f for everything and try to practice duck cancels until safe, or would it be better to practice a simple punish game, or using 2,1 and trying to use a flicker or peakaboo options? I'm not at the stage where my game knowledge is good enough to idenfity what punish fits what move (or even if an enemy is positive), but feel like trying to learn all of that at once is a bit much for one session at a go. Is there anything I can simply do when ever he get's into Lionheart to avoid just taking a big punish, or is training my brain to go ub3 and 1 or 2 to try and counter hit a simpler response to program whenever he switches into LH?

Find a good flowchart and run it over and over until people start adapting. Don't play high level Tekken by yourself. Your opponents are gonna mash and you are going to have to oppress them into not mashing. Learning a flowchart that works at your level will help you identify specific things to work on as you get better and the flowchart stops being as oppressive. For Steve, this means doing WR2 (a plus frame heat engager) into a frame trap (ideally safe with good CH reward) until they start blocking the frame trap, and then do WR2 into a low or throw or WR2 again. See my previous post in this thread about that and go find the few Good Moves you want to abuse. e: Here is a top level korean Steve doing this last night in a tournament: https://youtu.be/-huXy7wkBbQ?t=4m28s interrodactyl fucked around with this message at 17:42 on Mar 10, 2024 |

PhiDX had a good guide to get to purple in his last video lol I do think you should have some punishes down but deffo don't make it complicated, just have your 10f and use that for anything that isn't a whiff or stagger which you launch lol Maybe it's different with "the Counter Hit King" Edit: man, I "get hit for free" all the time especially at round start, i think i'm cleanly backdashing out then get owned by a power mid even though i feel like i'm holding back? lol

It wasn't a heat engager and you didn't have three. I think it, and a lot of other things, need to be addressed with heat. I played T6 online after 8 the other night and they really need to tone down the systems in 8. Takes away from the core of what tekken is supposed to be. I almost always lose to bears. It's such a weird choice that Tekken tracks your win rate per stage, but not per character. I'd love to have a list of which characters I need to learn to counter the most. The bears would be near the top.

spiritual bypass posted:I almost always lose to bears. Yeah, I’d really like per-character matchup stats. Bears are just such a weird matchup that it’s more than just knowledge checks, it’s that their body type and shape means that things you can generally assume in terms of safe positioning and movement often aren’t. Also the whole character specialist thing past the messing-around ranks - if you find a red+ bear, watch out. I fought the same Mighty Ruler Kuma twice over the weekend and considered it a marked improvement in the second set that I won a round.

I've spent some time with Leo. A real scrub killer within the realm of orange ranks. It kinda feels cheap to fakeout f+4 into 4 | 3+4 | 3,4 | 1,2 but they ALWAYS fall for it. Maybe this has already been posted ITT but in response to somebody posting "How should I learn?!" I thought this was a very good video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqZndya05yg It goes into some depth about how to learn to set you up for success in the higher ranks. You *can* just learn flowcharts or learn some character gimmick and combo or whatever and that might get you up to low red ranks, but then you're gonna have to relearn a bunch of poo poo because that's about when people start actually adapting to your bullshit and you can't get away with just flowcharting into the same moves every time etc. Learning fundamentals is good. I was able to move from Garyu to Tenryu just recently, and I also beat a friend who's a Mighty Ruler recently only using Jack's B+1+2 because I've learned timing, blocking and movement way better than I did before. Re: Combos. Honestly, I'm about to move into Mighty Ruler myself and I still don't really launch big combos. It's something I need to learn - when I can get launchers off, and the combos to go with them. I pretty much know one combo that gets 49 damage and it only works with one launcher, and even then I barely use it. Of course, knowing and being able to execute launchers and combos is absolutely a good thing to be able to do, and not getting enough launchers off is a weakness in my play right now, but knowing spacing, move timing and range, movement, blocking and punishing are *absolutely essential* to beat players in the red ranks and above. If you start out wrong you can get into bad habits that will hamstring you later. In my opinion, Jack is a really great character to learn because he's mostly poke-based. That means you *have* to learn when you can get small hits in to be any good with him, which sort of forces you to play in a manner where you're always considering what your opponent is doing or about to do at any given moment. I feel like that can set you up for success, vs maybe learning some characters where you can get away more with mashing etc.
