That's an interesting take. I'm bouncing between a lot of games currently, but most of them absolutely have increasing difficulty curves; an RTS, a traditional roguelike, a dark souls game, the system shock remake, etc. The only one that I'm sure won't ever get difficult is Detroit, which is a narrative game of type that's well known but new to me. I've shelved two games in the past few years since the final boss or level was just too dang hard for me.

I guess what I'm saying is that it really does depend on what you like to play, rather than blaming any nebulous market forces or developer tendencies for it.

I do want to play the System Shock remake eventually. RTS are good ones that get harder at the end. Dark Souls have good hard fights but you can also get too strong or use too strong of stuff to trivialize some of it. Elden Rings ending was heavily buoyed by Melania but the most challenging fights were in the first half. Too many in the end quarter were beat first try, I'm not good enough for that kinda thing so could be kicked up some but afaik any post-launch patches mostly just made stuff easier and fixed a few of the most broken launch things.

Sekiro was the best difficulty curve with the final boss being the hardest thing, I put it down after several nights of trying my best. I eventually beat it long after but in a cheesy way after spending time just relearning the controls and muscle memory.

I was definitely being too broad before with certain games on my mind. I think Yakuza games are the biggest one for me with that problem, there's a fun struggle at the start, some d-side bastard putting up one hell of a fight, and then it's exciting to power up and get new moves and heat actions and all that jazz. But before the halfway mark you reach a power level where fights just become tedious busy work, even the occasional difficulty spike they throw at you becomes more of just a chance to clear inventory out a little bit to save some time. Kind of a combo problem of frequency of trash fights and abundance of ways to grow OP just by playing and doing side content.

However, Amon is always a nice challenging treat for all the work to unlock him.

I think the draw of the ff7 remakes is mostly just fans of the original seeing the world re-imagined in full 3d with admittedly really nice graphics, and also the twist on the original's story where it's more of a time loop sequel to ff7 than a straight up remake. But as someone who has very little childhood experience with the original it just felt like a pretty-but-standard 3rd person character action game with weird janky combat that tries to be a hybrid jrpg/character action game but only has light vestigial RPG systems. I would have been way more into them if they were straight up turn-based jrpg remakes with modern graphics

I only played the first one though I don't know anything at all about the new one. It had phenomenal presentation values but just wasn't that fun to play without any personal attachments to the original game.

I know tons of ppl who have enjoyed the hell out of Remake/Rebirth without having played the original FF7 or at least not having played it as a child. The actual common denominator for ppl who dislike Remake/Rebirth seems to come from a complete misunderstanding of the combat system

I didn't like it, but I honestly think that's more to do with not being 14 (the Final Fantasy age) anymore. The combat didn't click with me either. I did play it right through to the Rufus fight, I think.

I'd like to get into Yakuza but don't know where to start - can people just pick up the latest one?

EDIT: Yeah, the combat is a big on for FF7R, but I don't blame the game for that - I think I wanted a turn based game and AFAIK, Final Fantasy doesn't do that anymore. I would have taken a character action game too. Its probably got its merits, but I felt disincentiveised to learn it considering I played this for "free" on PS+ and I couldn't shake that it was only the first 25% of the game (which i know isn't strictly the case now).

Do it sequentially and start with Yakuza Zero. It's the quintessential Yakuza game which also introduces the world and characters perfectly. It's really good too. After playing that you'll know if you want more of the same.

Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 are Remakes of 1 and 2. Play those instead of the originals.

E: I'm playing through Yakuza 3 which people say is worth skipping, but I'm sticking with Kiryu through thick and thin, and actually like the aesthetic and appreciate what they're trying to do.

Yeah lol I booted Y3 immediatelly after finishing Kiwami 2 and the difference was so shocking I put it down for a few months.

But after that wore off I went back to it and Y3 has that seaside vibe I really like. Really good on Steam Deck.

Oh I definitely get their appeal but they just have the absolute worst combat systems I've ever encountered. Just a chore to play. I thought I'd be able to tolerate it better when they switched to turn based for 7 but it was inexplicably worse somehow

The one a few years ago was part one. This is part two. Part 3 is still coming.

As soon as they finish it will be so long they can assuredly start remaking them again into a cohesive single title, then, do a total rework in three parts again.

Hahaha, oh man. Yeah, that's a bad look. She (understandably) hates most anime for infantilizing women and sexualising children and FF borders on that, I could see it getting very male gazey in a 90s way.

wilfredmerriweathr
Jul 11, 2005
It's weird because there's a lot of like, equality/equity threads in the game and for much of it it's actually way more progressive in its presentation, and indeed a lot of the game features women in positions of power and treats races and sexes much more evenly than the original.

But then you have an encounter where a scantily clad woman just keeps saying weirdly sexual poo poo and it's just sorta like "yeah I'm definitely not 14 years old anymore."

Granted my ex wife would have found it funnier but my current GF who already thinks gaming is for nerds would be like uhh wtf

Tldr if your wife has a sense of humor and you preface the game with "this thing is anime as gently caress so be prepared for titties that defy gravity and lots of weird innuendo" then you'll probably have a great time laughing at it. It is however very male gaze-y at times and honestly much like a lot of anime it makes me just roll my eyes and be like "JFC anime can be painful as hell" - I hate most anime for probably the eame reasons your wife does, but rebirth is a kick rear end game regardless

As said below, the horniest character is definitely cloud in the original and tifa in rebirth and aside from a handful of moments the game is very much girl power

I don't think the horny in rebirth is anything different from the original ffvii it's just I probably didn't notice it as much because each character was made of 20 polygons max.

Baldurs Gate III sex still looks like action figures being mashed together, but it does feel narratively earned in based in character agency, rather than the player's desire to see elf tits, which they could just do by removing characters clothes.

It's just this. I have friends (like IRL friends) with only fans and I've definitely dated poly girls before.

It just feels weird when it's gamified.

I also don't like strip clubs even though I have friends in sex work. Just not for me. I don't have to pay to get people to take their clothes off , YMMV

To be clear it's not that I don't like sex in games, I just don't see the point of having it be part of gameplay. I don't care if people are having sex all the time in the game, I just don't want it to be gamified if that makes sense?

Unless it's like fun or campy, the cross dressing part is hilarious

E: I'm pretty old school when it comes to dating and I'm a "serial monogamist" as an ex put it, so part of it is definitely just me not being remotely interested in sex or romance except with my actual, IRL partner

I don't hate it but yes actually I've thought a lot about this over the years and I genuinely don't enjoy games where I do things that I can do in real life, like:

I do track days in my car, and since I started doing them I am no longer interested in racing games even though they can teach me tracks and skills

I ski about 100 days a year and don't have any interest in skiing games, same for MTB in riders Republic

I love backpacking but dislike walking sims

I think I really do only like games that let me do poo poo I CAN'T in the real world, because if I can do the thing IRL then I find it a waste of time to play a game about it.

I'm just weird as gently caress maybe? Or maybe I enjoy the fact that games let me experience activities and worlds i will otherwise never get to experience? Either way that doesn't seem weird to me...

Now y'all got me curious, does anyone else feel similarly? I grew up in an abusive household so as a child, gaming was my escape. But now that I have the freedom to do poo poo IRL I only enjoy games that let me experience new things I can't do
