Mainland is absolutely gonna soak the international creditors, but that really doesn't fix the situation. Evergrande owes $60 billion more than their supposed assets (and their assets are unfinished apartments that probably haven't been fully marked down). Single-digit billions of that are international debt. I'd assume Country Garden is like that. For better or worse this is a China problem that it has to solve for itself. Ceciltron posted:Is it bad that I kind of like this attempt at least that they are trying for *some* kind of exterior aesthetics? All the hideous condo towers I see built here look the same and are all just blank or slightly geometric facades. Eh it's an aesthetic opinion not a law, but think how ridiculous that would actually look from the ground. Tall tall building, teeny tiny fake townhouse on top? Most of the news stories I've seen about Country Garden show the planted greenery buildings they do, which are actually good. So it's not like they can't do style. But that costs more. This is a cheap building they dressed up with fake luxury, so I'm having a cheap lol.

I always liked how weird so many of the apartment buildings in China are. More interesting than Korea's sea of identical white rectangles.

I actually think the repetitive tower blocks like you get in Korean 'suburbs' are pretty okay. The buildings are architecturally simple enough that they work kind of as giant canvases, a neutral shade accentuating the rest of the colors in the neighborhood and making them pop. On a nice day with a blue sky in the neighborhoods with lots of trees, especially the more modern ones with more landscaping, it can actually be really pretty. As far as methods go of getting a ridiculous number of families reasonably nice spaces to live, compressed within a tiny area, I don't think it's bad at all. Now in some of the grimmer areas, or places without trees, yeah they can be kind of hideous. I don't respect that Chinese development though; that's very 1990s Lotte-style random kitsch. It plays against the strengths of the style of architecture while also not at all capturing the charm of the inspiration. Interesting is one thing but that doesn't make it a nice place to live.

it doesn't look less tacky from ground level: https://j.map.baidu.com/8b/OCai also doesn't look too imposing. Maybe a fifty storey block would be too high, but twenty-five floors atop a five storey sprawling mall development with offsets all around doesn't feel too imposing

many reports observing Li Keqiang going off-script in the premier's statement in 2020 to talk about rural poverty when Xi wanted a victory lap (Xi's admin would declare extreme poverty successfully eradicated in a complete victory the next year, in Feb); Xi might not want a second episode of that anyway, another addition to the Lu Shaye greatest hits: https://twitter.com/wentisung/status/1766027824228708470 (yes, that guy)

Apropos, on Country Garden's travails: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_UhVy9MY_8 It can be observed that when national financial policy rewards leveraged expansion (to, e.g., achieve window guidance targets), companies that do not leverage are quickly outgrown and subsumed by those that do. In the end, only companies that took excessive risks to back excessive expansion are left standing.

(As shitheaded as the majority are, this totally falls into their limited government ideological bias.) But it's very funny watching the freeze peach GOP idiots try to make laws preventing conservative trolls from getting banned from facebook at the same time as banning a different social media platform.

Tai posted:At least there were actual houses in 2008 lmao I recall seeing IRL a couple of blocks of houses (in two states) halt construction in 2008 and sit as concrete shells. They wound up being completed 2-3 years later but it was uncanny living next to a half-finished gated community. I wonder who ran out of funds there, but I think US law requires pre-payments for housing constructions sit in a third-party escrow until contractual milestones are met.

Big rear end On Fire posted:Huh, I don't see it happening. National security concerns would outweigh limited government ideals particularly in this case where it's a matter of a foreign government's reach vs a law enacted by US gov. They already struck down the Montana law. The government would have to prove more than just "concerns", which they have absolutely won't be able to do. Tiktok isn't a foreign government. (Yes I know, all Chinese companies are only independent as long as their executives aren't imprisoned on bullshit charges, but I think it'll be hard to argue that in court.) And we already had this go-around with Trump, the company started working on plans to put US data with Oracle (giving a plum to a GOP supporter as payola). And then Trump lost interest because that wasn't exciting. The GOP is mostly Trump-clones now, they do this poo poo for show. Dems are going along for purely electoral reasons. If it passes Biden will sign it, again just for election. But then the DoJ will have no incentive to go all-out defending it.
