Cissnei is written as if the player already cares about her and therefore sees no reason to make her do anything that would make the player care about her. I don't care that it's the same writer who originally wrote her; if anything that just makes it worse. If it's the writer's pet character then it is literally the kind of fanfic writing being complained about?

I gotta ask, cause I don't really remember how she was written despite her involvement in the events of that chapter and I haven't gotten back there in my Hard playthrough yet, but how was her treatment any different than, say, Rhonda?

Rhonda was introduced with a cutscene explaining her situation and motivations. Rhonda's quest with her dog and her son gives you more context for her character. It's repeatedly emphasized that she COULD sell you out, but she won't, for now.

By contrast, Cissnei is infinitely helpful to you right away for very little reason. She seems to have nothing better to do than help out these random strangers as if she's been your best friend the whole time. They do have this whole wink-and-nod thing about her secretly being a Turk, and I suppose this might lead a new player to find her extreme helpfulness suspicious, but they never give a pay-off for that because as it turns out she is in fact a perfectly nice and trustworthy person.

Edit: I suppose a simpler way to put it is that she is your friend by default, as if there was never any other possibility. As if she doesn't need an explanation for why she should help you, and why she's in the game at all, so she doesn't get one.

What? She's introduced basically holding the party at weaponpoint and you can see that change when she recognizes Cloud, and more when it becomes apparent she knows who Cait Sith is. She's not "infinitely helpful for no reason".

Yes, she becomes infinitely helpful the moment she recognizes you? And there's no explanation for this unless you've played Crisis Core. Because the game simply doesn't care.

You might see it as a mystery to be solved, but the writing doesn't seem to.

The game could not possibly make it more obvious she has a connection to Shinra and Zack short of straight up just having extended Crisis Core flashbacks jammed into it.

I completely disagree with you. I dunno what else to say.

Honestly to me it seems like the series isn't done with her yet, so it's setting up that she knows something for new players (who really ought to have played Crisis Core by now since they released it leading into this game, but I digress), while also setting up something new with her being able to see the whispers, which hopefully will be resolved in Part 3? I dunno.

Like a lot of things, I think it might have landed better if we didn't have to wait for the next game to see if it pays off, though.

They make it obvious that she has connections to another game, yes. They do not not give the player a reason to care about that. We've already had multiple people here say "learning that she's from Crisis Core explains everything (derogatory)." Because nothing she does in this game is notable or interesting, she's just helpful right from the beginning and never stops being helpful. If you were generous maybe you could say that she ties into Cait Sith's plotline, but by the time that pays off she no longer exists in the plot. She also does not add anything of interest to learning about Zack. She's just this lady who knew him, I guess. His parents being in the village do far more for that with far less screentime.

Regarding the Chadley thing: I hadn't really considered that people actually wouldn't like being annoyed. I find him annoying and I find that a good thing - I don't just want to feel positive emotions from video games. He's just a little doofus! It's like the bits of Death Stranding that are boring on purpose, as a bit: it distinctly enhances the game for me. I guess this isn't a thing everyone feels, fair enough!

It's also inherently funny that he Chadley'd himself with Mai, because it immediately invites the possibility that Mai will create her own robot helper, who she will also find annoying.

Chadley gives off Wesley Crusher child genius know-it-all vibes and he’s annoying to me and I can take all of that in small amounts but it really rubs me the wrong way when he takes up so much space while often saying so little. It’s pretty simple. I’m glad for the people who like him. Maybe they’ll get an All About Chadley spinoff.

I've never played Crisis Core and I thought she was fine. It's very clear when you show up that she is helping you because she recognizes Cloud in some way. I'm not sure if she is confusing him with Zack or whether she knew Cloud directly but her whole demeanor changed after that moment of recognition.

During the protorelic storyline we learn that she's a former? Turk but still working with Shinra. As mentioned, she can see Whispers which is a big neon sign that she is tied up in this somehow. Those are both extremely notable and interesting things!

Overall yeah she's not like the best random helpful town leader NPC ever (that honor goes to Gus and his hype man) but I'm interested to find out more about her, why she left what she was doing before this, and why she can see Whispers.

Currently using Cloud, Yuffie and Red because they have really good synergy skills (Magic Blade and Foxfire) and Red has party wide Haste.

So far at least you can just run past the open world if you don't want to engage with it.

There is a lot that I admire about this game, but I’ve also been feeling a bit burned out as I come up in the 40 hour mark (I’m just about done with Corel, heading to Gongaga).

I love the story and the spectacle and can appreciate the combat system but as the game has gone on, everything feels like it takes just a little too long - from battles to mini games to just animations for some things.

I think I’m just going to push things down to easy and relax my way through the rest. Again, I’m not arguing it’s a bad game - I’m just starting to wonder if the tradeoffs of blowing things out to 3 60+ hour games are becoming a bit too extreme. The pacing just feels off to me.

I like the open world stuff, but I feel like some of the zones didn't need to have as much of it as they did. It was a little silly when Nibelheim had all of the world intel stuff shoved to one half of the map because the rest of it was used for main story stuff.

It's also weird that they insisted on every zone having around the same amount of world intel, but some zones will just have way more side quests than others.

I'm still pretty bad at the combat on normal even 60 hours in and have had to turn down the difficulty to easy numerous times so maybe I'm missing something. I haven't done the actual treasure hunting yet so maybe the fights for it are fun

If you have 3 ATB bars, your ATB recharges faster because it splits your existing bar into 3 instead of 2 so it's a passive bonus

I felt like that was the nadir of the game for me, overall. None of its bad or anything but the amount of distractions at that point is just overwhelming. It definitely does pick up after that though so if you're feeling the burn you can always come back later. You can't really miss anything in the game so if you feel like beelining for the story, do it. If you care later you can come back and do anything you want.

Can someone please for the love the the christian christ tell me the mechanics of (summon spoiler) Odin? Only thing I know is APB him and perfect block him or you die instantly. But what the gently caress is the rest of it? I use an APB attack and he uses reprisal. Like when does he use this ability? I don't spam the same ability over and over again, which is what I thought caused it, but I used a wholly unique one and he still did it; chi trap and focus strike. I can't rely on perfect block because I'm terrible at it, even with the materia.

This is why I hated this fight with every fiber of my being when I did it to get the materia and did it on the easiest difficulty. His mechanics are confusing and, frankly, trash. He requires the kind of poo poo you see'd see in XVI or Devil May Cry, which is fine because they're built for that sort of thing. You think you got the mechanics down but no, he does the poo poo out of the blue and you want to tear your hair out because of how stupid all this is.

Reprisal is bullshit. From what I've read, he gets stacks of it as he damages you, letting him cancel out of basically anything to hit you when you use an ATB action. Reprisal does damage, so getting hit with Reprisal will give him stacks of Reprisal. It sucks.

It's not itself the black materia. I think they're saying that Cait Sith effectively gave them the black materia by giving them the means to acquire it.
