As far as the tech itself the problem is right now there's room for some refinements but the way the structures work is kind of at a dead end. To get the next "big leap" is going to need a new approach, possibly entirely new. And that isn't to say it won't happen, but the current crop are "very neat" as the kids say but don't have a tonne of room above to grow. I think the weirdest conversation I've had about AI was someone who was doomering about how it was going to ruin the world and people would just stop doing anything. When I attempted to explain I was told "the technical stuff is boring". Apparently I was meant to just go "yeah we're all doomed you're right" lol The icing on the cake was they also firmly believed in simulation theory, and also worked in a super technical field they loved to ramble about so I don't even loving know.

I was at a talk a while back with someone who works alongside law enforcement using OSI to track down paedophile groups online. They were describing how such groups have embraced AI image generation, creating and sharing their own models scraped from the tens of thousands of abuse images they horde.

When the new language and art models were starting to make a splash someone pointed out that part of the reason they hook the people they do is that they're a natural Skinner box. The jank is actually part of the appeal because of the excitement of hitting the lever over and over again until you hit the jackpot. Which is great as a toy, not so much for being useful or productive.

I was a graphic design major in undergrad and hardly worked in that field ever as it didn’t pay well and was competitive I started my current career track not quite a decade ago and got my foot in the door doing pointless repetitive horseshit due to people older than me “not knowing what a PDF was” or “how to do the computer machine.” I did a lot of exactly the kind of tasks you tell an AI to do- “pull info into a spreadsheet and make it look pretty for me because I don’t know how to attach pics in Word” several years of work experience and I was able to do my manager’s job better than them (because I was doing it all) and used it to progress at other companies who valued my real world hands on knowledge that kind of entry level job where a human being does a little bit everything until they know the field well might not exist in the future, I don't know where a pipeline of experienced employees is going to come from in a lot of fields

I think one of the biggest issues is that AI is going to be used in education, and to further justify budget cuts to public education, both at the secondary and especially at the university level. AI probably won't be used to write lectures (at least not at first) but it will be used to teach classes and grade assignments, all overseen by a few harried and overworked academic employees responsible for overseeing tens of classes to "troubleshoot" (do nothing). Arizona State University, for example, is trying to cut their writing tutoring center and replace all of the already part-time employees with AI. Machines are going to be teaching humans how to communicate with other humans. Don't worry though, tuition will keep going up!

Funnily enough they'd be right insofar as the Wright Brothers made their specific technology go as far as it could, and it took incredible innovations and new ideas and research and knowledge to do better. There's no reason to assume someone won't create a better chatGPT or dalle or whatever, but it isn't going to happen with the current iteration of technology. If you've read the white papers (you have right?) there's not much room to improve the system in immediate or easy ways. Largely the data scraped being expanded massively was the largest contributing factor along with a lot of good, steady improvements to the detection systems and creation methodology. This generation of "AI" is an improvement on previous generations, but not as much technically as you'd think and it's taken longer than people think. It's more "adding more polygons and light sources because you have better hardware" rather than "that nerd figured out fast inverse square root". We'll for sure have newer and better versions, but they're going to need to do a lot spicier things to make it happen, and it won't be like next year.

Consumers seem to select for cheaper and shittier in most cases and LLMs are great for that, so, a good engine to drive the further degeneration of society. Also if you assign an AI to set prices it has even less moral compunctions than the sleaziest of humans to say "just keep raising the price of everything, that will cause us to make more money", and they make pricing collusion more deniable. That said it feels like they might proverbially take what's left of the internet out behind the shed so maybe it will be a wash. Calling them "AI" at all, evoking truly intelligent machines from scifi like Asimov or Terminator or whatever, seems like pure hype. I haven't seen anything that makes it look like they'll ever be able to do more than regurgitate remixes of things humans have already done, so the idea that they're some "next step" in the march of scientific progress seems doubtful.
