Lol at wanting Roger Ebert to pay more respect to videogames. Why single him out, or were those goobers also fussing at Jerry Saltz to appreciate games more too?

Yeah that too. Like it’s not a good rpg and the shooting is good “for an rpg”, and the acting that was ground breaking in like 2010 just isn’t

Like most artforms, video games reached perfection in 1996. Everything past that has just been a downgrade.

Video games are not inherently art but they may be or contain art, similar to any other product that has a practical purpose.

Speaking of which, I got the Jeff Minter Digital Eclipse collection.

It's still a fine package but it's definitely less focused than the Making of Karateka. Also most of these old Llamasoft games are pretty unplayable lol... I wonder if I would have gotten into games if this was what I grew up with.

This came out a year before Super Mario Bros., and ironically for VG history purposes my takeaway from this collection has been "Nintendo was so important for having guys who thought 'What if we made a game character where it felt good to jump and it wasn't like pushing a sack of rocks'"

The music light machine thing is interesting though and I could probably see myself playing more Tempest 2000. I might also go back and check Polybius for a Llamasoft with contemporary design

Oh yeah the game where you mow the lawn is also less unplayable than others

Most people who participate in the "X as art" debates are using "Art" as a shorthand for "activity that is socially acceptable for me to spend hours and hours of my life on'

the utilitarian view of video games as "entertainment" is just one lens we can view them through, just as we can view them through a different lens which evaluates them as creative works. topic locked.

it is because what people really wanted from "art" was establishment approval that forms of art like film have, and Roger Ebert is the one film critic everyone knew. thank you

he was also the most publicly vocal about the topic which made everyone crazy to have his approval despite him at the time being an old rear end dude whose conception of video games was, like, breakout on atari

Film TV and Comics all got that chip on their shoulder sometimes too. Reckon the friction between being popular enjoyed by the masses and the sense of legitimacy of art or motions of gatekeeping art are all deliberately misdirected squabbling that can more accurately be levied as complaints with how capitalism distributes wealth and resources and it's control over which arts may be successfully pursued and viewed.
