DJJIB-DJDCT posted:Liberal teleology, I would imagine. "March of progress" towards liberal capitalist democracy. The way I always heard it in school/tv/etc, was that it was revolutionary because it set in law for the first time that the king was not an all powerful absolute ruler who could rule by decree. That it set in law the principle of “consent of the governed” and that true national sovereignty did not reside in any one man. Now this is not only all bogus, but it is not even true within the tradition of Common Law that the Magna Carta is a part of. Rulers with legal checks on their power are commonplace, if not the majority, throughout all recorded history across the globe. The Germanic customs from which Common Law descends are in fact full of societies where the Ruler is elected to the position by the rest of the nobility. The law in England itself has multiple prior examples of the kings authority being legally limited.

Clip-On Fedora posted:This is really interesting, and for me it explains why liberals tend to overvalue writers and artists, and give them powerful shamanistic qualities they don't actually have. Forgive me for not knowing more, but didn't this culminate in Alan Moore now believing he is an actual magician of some sort? That would follow what you're saying, as crazy as it seems. He was treated as if he was magical, in the creative sense, until it reached a point where he believed he had occult powers. galagazombie posted:The way I always heard it in school/tv/etc, was that it was revolutionary because it set in law for the first time that the king was not an all powerful absolute ruler who could rule by decree. That it set in law the principle of “consent of the governed” and that true national sovereignty did not reside in any one man. It's actually pretty funny, because of course medieval monarchs were incredibly weak and the court and vessels not only managed most of the affairs of state because a bureaucracy did not exist to centralize administration under the monarch, but they held most of the military and financial power as well. A 13th century monarch was about as weak as you can imagine, with the French king probably the strongest, and even then still more than a hundred years away from achieving even this amount of direct control: Behold! Absolute monarchy. lmao. e: In the year the Magna Carta was written, Italy was in the middle of a century of warfare because it was an entirely open question whether the Holy Roman Emperor or Pope had more authority over the cities of northern Italy, and even for the winner, "influence" is probably the better word because even the most powerful feudal nobles could not assert any direct control over a sufficiently wealthy city. I was listening to the age of napoleon podcast, so I don't know if this is right or not, but he said that the enlightenment era actually brought about the idea of absolute monarchy, which is different from how I was taught in school. The idea is that the enlightnment thinkers believed everyone should be equal. That means equal under the law. The arisocracy has too much power, so invest more power in the king so he can hold them accountable to the law. Everybody's equal now! Except for the king, but just swap that out for a president and bob's you uncle.

absolutist ideas were floating around way before the enlightenment, but it is true that the movement towards absolutism was often supported by the lower classes because it's a lot better to have one big tyrant somewhere far away who doesn't care about you as long as the taxes are paid than it is to have a lot of petty tyrants close to home who can gently caress with you personally

And now here we are and I, apparently along with many others, wont be votin for Genocide Joe. What a flop he is. I wish he was still lucid enough to know how much of a pathetic failure he is even though he kinda sorta eventually became president. The important point is to not just recognize this in Biden, because he is only a single man elevated by a system. This pattern will continue after he dies unless we stop it.

Reading between the lines it seems like Biden is the only person on his staff who actually wants to put him in public appearances. It's example after example of "his staff doesn't want him to look like a sleepy old man and he doesn't like it one bit". It's pretty clear that his best shot is purely to rely on Trump's unpopularity and hide in the basement.
