The driver of a Ram 2500 Kindermulcher crossed the center line on a two lane road here and caused a catastrophic crash that killed a woman and closed the road and an adjacent rail line for four hours. anyway

Update on this. It's been a week and the police have neither charged the driver nor identified her. Local social media has identified her, said she's a known problem drunk driver, and said that she was released from the hospital same day so they're not just waiting for her to heal up before they charge her.

In better news, cycling numbers have doubled in Paris in just a year. They've been going whole-hog on bike infra.

https://www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeurs/article/2023/11/11/a-paris-la-frequentation-des-pistes-cyclables-a-double-en-un-an_6199510_4355770.html
(translated from French)

quote:

This doubling, or even tripling in some places, does not surprise the Deputy Mayor in charge of mobility and public space, David Belliard (Europe Ecologie-Les Verts, EELV): “We already knew that the use of cycling has gone far beyond the simple mode effect. (...) While the weather has deteriorated in Paris in recent weeks, we have still recorded attendance records. ”

“In more mobility than elsewhere, the central issue is supply rather than demand,” says the elected representative, who claims that the municipality has “massically amplified infrastructure supply” since its re-election in 2020, building protected cycle lanes and installing parking spaces. This is the induced traffic principle: when an infrastructure is created or improved, it generates an additional volume of traffic, regardless of the mode of transport concerned (road, rail, bicycle, walking, etc.).

quote:

In addition to the lessons of road counting statistics; at peak times, there are more bicycles than cars on certain representative axes of the capital. On the Avenue de Flanders, the boulevard Voltaire and Boulevard Magenta, the average never exceeds 384 motor vehicles per hour on the central part of the road, compared with 537 bicycles on the cycle tracks in September and October.

The roads are saturated during peak hours, while a relative fluidity remains on the cycle lanes, in particular because of the low ground occupancy of the bicycle. A bicycle takes about 1.5 square meters to the ground to transport a person, five times less than a car (7.5 square meters for the best-selling SUV, the Peugeot 2008) – in Paris and Ile-de-France, there are 1.1 people on average per vehicle.

Chouette.

I'll be in Paris very briefly and will have to see if it looks different from last time I actually spent some time there. I'm going to buy an old road bike when I get to my actual destination and stash that with the in-laws so I can ride around the Gironde area and get out of the house. Tons of bike paths around and drivers are generally pretty respectful of other road users. Not exactly a lot of hills to climb in that area unfortunately.

traffic modeling is mostly done with those big black tubey cables you'll see laid over the road in pairs
they're pressure sensors & sit in pairs to measure vehicle speed

those kinds of problems can't be fixed through that though because they arise from having mixed speed/size traffic at all, it's always bad bc as it approaches capacity you can't keep it safe without splitting the vehicles up or dropping them all to the same speed

every intersection of two streets should be an all-way stop if it's not a traffic light imo
so many bad intersections in my neighborhood where t-bones are frequent could be greatly helped by making it an all-way stop.

my new favorite way to pass time when in the passenger seat of a car is to look at other cars and note how many people are on their phones while driving. it's a lot lmfaaaooo

best is the ones who have the phone in a holder and are clearly facetiming or watching youtube while driving

i like the trend of putting the phone on speaker mode, then holding it directly in front of your mouth anyway. just put it to your ear man rotating it 180 degrees doesn't suddenly make this whole operation safe.

I had to run out for fifteen minutes yesterday and saw two drivers go over the yellow line specifically because of this

oregon has a law specifically about using your phone for anything other than talking/listening to music through an earpiece while driving and while of course it’s not perfect there’s a lot less loving around with a handset while in traffic here than where im from (texas lol)

it’s like the locals grow up with the idea that it’s not ok, or is less ok, and that sticks with a lot of them for life

We got a law like that a few years ago, and it did nothing because everyone knows there's no enforcement of traffic laws anymore.

I do this while walking and I've actually got to cut down because it makes me furious. Between all the rolling stops and people parked on the sidewalk, it just tweaks my blood pressure too much. Trying to reserve my ire for people who actually hit me.

you can do very sophisticated traffic modeling with fiber optic and it’s very cool what we can do. you get to know exact speed, positioning, weight, if they stop, where they’re at on the street, direction.

When i bus commuted every day, I'd do this, and my count was always more than 50% of the drivers around the bus on i5 were actively doing something on their phone.
