There's also something a little funny and a little just mean about people missing Toinette's actual role which is deeply rooted in her being a woman and instead going "oh it's a race thing. It's about her race" Bella's first true romantic relationship where they both grow and learn from each other is with a woman? Must be a magical negro thing.

Hell yes, exactly this
Read the shooting script: https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Poor-Things-Read-The-Screenplay.pdf

Toinette doesn't lecture Bella about anything. She says "I'm a socialist - we want to make the world better", Bella says "Rad, me too" and the rest of their interactions are just talking and being nice to each other
She's literally the first and only character in the movie that interacts with Bella as a friend and not a transaction (and sure it's underwritten but we're 2/3rds into a nearly 2.5 hour movie at this point, they need to wrap it up)

yeah it seems like the point is that she's the first person that sees Bella as anything other than an Oddity. even the old lady on the ship and her catty gay best friend like spending time with Bella because she's different and entertaining to be around as a result.
it's like graduating from High School and meeting people in the "real world" that aren't immediately aware of all this baggage you've had with you since your childhood. All of a sudden people see you as You, the person you are in that moment, and not the person you were at all these other times before that.

You make a fair point. Though we don't really get to know much about her beyond that she likes philosophy and is the sort of person who is excited about being threatened to be thrown overboard

She'd be a C-SPAM poster

Also I've got to be honest I don't think you can consider a character an actual magical negro trope without them being magical or otherwise having another oversized trait that makes them an other. That's the problem with the whole trope. It's taking black characters and being superficially kind to them while also keeping them as others who exist in service of white people. Both Harry and Toinette are insiders who are exposing Bella to the world, not others who are exposing her to secret knowledge only known by the others.

The movie is almost idiotic in how loud it is about what it is about while being an allegory. They're hitting you over the head when Bella asks why people don't just have sex all the time and then goes on a guided tour of philosophy.

Americans’ entire understanding of the world is based on movies and other media consumption. Movies must be an accurate and factual recounting of events. They are so truthful that movies will change reality to match.

i disagree with that, you can gain a lot of context for what certain tones of voice mean in different languages. You can even learn the language over time!

e: I think in order for this to be true, the viewing experience would have to basically be "the same" for an audience whether they are watching the show with the original vocal audio track with subtitles OR a version of the show that is cut to have no vocal audio track but does have subtitles. if there is truly nothing gained by listening to the original performance, the experience of doing these two things should leave someone with basically the same impression of the show.

People with a very basic sense of media literacy, like English 101 level, get caught up in things like "every character must be 3 dimensional" and do not recognize that the craft of creating art is as much about breaking rules as learning them, once you've mastered those things and have progressed as an artist.

Roger prepares to erase magically Aren's memories of all that happened. However, it doesn't work; the magic is fading. Aren has sparked rebellion among Society members, e.g., a farm hand who refuses to help a white farmer, and an executive who was earlier touching a white executive's crotch, but now insists his own crotch be touched too.

Aren notes Lizzie has made it back to Los Angeles; he finds her and they reconcile. However, in the last scene, Lizzie goes into a hairstylist and takes a secret entrance to visit her own Society: "SOSWAG", or "Society of Supportive Wives and Girlfriends".
