Preacher has not aged very well, I don't think. It's been AGES since I read any Hellblazer, can't speak to that. From what I've heard "The Boys" was a success in part because they threw a poo poo-ton of garbage out from the comics.

DJJIB-DJDCT posted:That was excellent. Thanks. lol, despite his flaws, I don't actually hate Ennis, so I'm probably the right guy to ask this question. I will try to keep this short. Long story short, he grew up in Northern Ireland on the protestant side of things. I never read it, but his break out comic seemed to be a semi-autobiographical comic about him growing up during The Troubles. He has contempt for the IRA because he thinks they're a bunch of bungling arrogant fuckups who don't care about civilian casualties. He hates Irish Americans who support the cause more though, because he thinks they're a bunch of stupid weaboos (ireaboos?) sticking their dick into a situation they don't understand and making it worse. Even though, he grew up protestant, he is an Atheist. He hates the Catholic Church, but generally he hates all organized religion because he thinks they're a bunch of humorless corrupt scolds and bullies who want to crush what little joy people are allowed in life. Also, he thinks The Royal family and the British ruling class are a bunch of sadistic demons and freaks. Ironically, he hero worships the SAS though. This probably comes from him reading a lot of war comics and stuff like 2000 AD and Dan Dare when he was a kid (EDIT: Which would explain all the recognizably British myths and stereotypes about the Second World War). Ennis is definitely a product of British boys comics. If he had his way, he would spend his career writing war comics, but because of the way the American comic book industry is set up, he has to write superhero and superhero adjacent stuff, which he hates. His hatred of superheroes comes from the fact that he thinks they're silly and juvenile, but also because he tends to hate anything that romanticizes rich people and elites terrorizing the working class. He hates vampire stories for the same reason, but he doesn't get flack for that one because everyone pretty much agrees that Ann Rice novels were a mistake. The funny thing is, despite all the weird hosed up comics he writes and his awful sense of humor, he seems to be one of the most decent, unpretentious guys in the industry. Definitely not someone who would ever call himself a chaos magician. Also, even though he would describe himself as apolitical, he's probably the closest thing the American comic book industry has to an actual socialist writer. That Yom Kippur War everyone was sharing excerpts from in the Israeli Palestine thread was definitely a misfire though. He's normally much better at writing war comics, at least from my experience. For one, he knows the Russians are responsible for winning WWII and the French aren't a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys. Clip-On Fedora has issued a correction as of 03:29 on Mar 19, 2024 |

A shocking 40% of voters think that Trump's policies helped them personally. Only 18% of voters said that Biden's policies help them personally. This cuts across all demographic groups. This shows that voters have little to no understanding of economics. What many voters mean is that the economy treated them better under Trump (until COVID-19 hit) than under Biden. Trump didn't cause the good economy due to his policies though. He simply inherited a good economy from Barack Obama. Biden was hit with the aftermath of the pandemic, namely high inflation. It was not his policies that caused inflation. It was disturbances to supply chains and logistics that happened on Trump's watch and about which he couldn't do anything that caused the inflation. But voters don't understand that presidents don't really have much effect on the economy. Also, some respondents confused "policies that helped me personally" with "policies I like." For example, some of them cited Trump's plan to build a wall on the Mexican border as a plus for Trump. Of course, very few people benefited personally from the plan, which was never executed anyway. Still, Biden has to deal with perception, not reality. That's the way it goes in politics.

All the worst parts they threw out came from Ennis, but all the best parts they kept in also came from Ennis. Garth Ennis is a land of contrasts. I'd also like to add that he's probably one of the best writers John Constantine has ever had.

pencilhands posted:This shows that voters have little to no understanding of economics. Blaming the voters is the coward's way out, and it's also a baby brained analysis of basic socio-economic forces here. Of course the Ducklos, lanyards, and ACA Hot Chocolate Pajama Boys do this though. They are infantile failsons who can achieve nothing but having success foisted upon them by their daddy's friends. There's a lot of poo poo that has gone wrong due to America and our sicko allies in the Global North, but I think the last fifty or sixty years of the misery machine going on full auto-pilot has completely hosed us. At the very least, imperialists in the 1950s or so, sort of knew what was happening. Can the same be said for Pete Buttigiegeg?

I think he said he got the inspiration from a nightmare he had about being trapped in a house while the worst people imaginable were outside and trying to break in to get at him.
