This could be really fun. I've played games that just let you knock one little physics object around and spent way too long trying to get it over some hill or into a cutscenes to see if it stays.

For me with zachtronics games, after the easy tutorial levels eventually I get to a medium difficulty level that requires planning and i just say gently caress it

I don’t know why more devs don’t add gif export functions to their games. It’s ~free marketing~

It’s a lot of fun and occasionally you’ll design something that is extremely satisfying. I also like that the game gives you a lot of feedback about how quick/efficient you’re being compared to other players, so if you had fun with a stage you can choose to keep iterating to boost your global ranking. It doesn’t do anything but it is cool! You can also compare your solutions to your Steam friends, which I hated because I have physicists and mathematicians on my friends list

Console games don’t have to put any effort into video recording because Xbox and PS both have system-level video capture for free Also most games aren’t suited to creating infinitely repeating sequences like this one is

I either sent a message with an image attached and downloaded it from the website or app (it might not work on the website anymore, not sure, haven’t used a PlayStation in a while), or just copied the images onto a USB drive.

Ghosts n Goblins Resurrection is miserable The paper puppet aesthetic sucks The difficulty is like those super Mario torture levels. I don’t mind hard if it feels like it’s a skill issue but instead there’s a ton of traps that feel unfair and the only way to progress is to memorize where all the death traps are instead of exercising quick thinking

I watched PJ Dicesare, a literal ghosts and goblins speedrunner, struggle with significant portions of Resurrection because it's hideously badly designed and some sections are nearly impossible even when incredibly skilled. also, bugs! You do not want significant bugs when a game is trying to be hard in the first place!

i think devs tend to view the paper doll animation thing as an efficient means of cost cutting for getting properly animated sprites, but it on the whole tends to make games look worse. you need superb art direction to make it work ala ender lillies or dragon's crown, or else it just looks like a newgrounds game that somehow escaped the bonds of the early 2000s if you're looking for efficient sprite production, i genuinely think some kind of 3D -> 2D pipeline ala dead cells is the way to go. there's some more setup required, but the results look unambiguously better

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with an action game where you're supposed to repeatedly try and fail sections and solve them like a puzzle, rather than having everything be sightreadable. Whether this particular game does it well is another question, but the idea of an action platformer that's basically unfair if you try to play it as a twitchy reaction game, and only becomes doable as you come up with strats over multiple attempts, is not an unreasonable one. That's basically the core of how classicvanias work.

the thing i generally don't like is the super meat boy-esque curve where you are expected to repeatedly fail, but "win" by nailing a good run once. it's hard to explain but it sometimes feels more like getting lucky than getting good if you pass a level

Same, I tend to feel that scenarios where you have to win through information you gain only by failing are unfair. It should be at least theoretically possible to one-shot anything by observation rather than luck

If I beat something in a game first time it's probably a sign that the game is too easy because I'm bad.

haveblue posted:Same, I tend to feel that scenarios where you have to win through information you gain only by failing are unfair. It should be at least theoretically possible to one-shot anything by observation rather than luck I agree, but I also think retrying something should waste as little of your time as possible and I wish super meat boy’s approach of reloading the level less than a second after you lose was way more common because it really does a lot to make repeated attempts less annoying.

The play pattern I specifically like is like, where you reach a new room, maybe a bit damaged because you didn't do the previous room perfectly yet, and then it just seems overwhelmingly impossible. You die, but then sit down and think about what you could have done differently. To use castlevania examples, you might think: would this section be easier if I had the cross instead of the axe? What if I stood further back while fighting? What if I didn't jump? Should I switch to the other character here? And then over the course of another few attempts, you figure out how the room works, which of your options are good here, and develop a plan. The level is sort of a rolling series of solved rooms, rooms you're still figuring out but can limp through with damage, and the room that still kills you. Each attempt, you push it back a little bit at a time until you've managed to limp through the boss and you're onto the next level, reseting it. It's not really a play pattern you can get with designs that are supposed to be sight readable. If the way you react to a challenge is obvious on the first try, and you only die because it's hard to do, you never have that moment of thinking "hm, what could I do differently next time?", you already know what to do, and just need to do it better. I think both approaches have their place in the toolbox of game design, and definitely completely disagree that if a challenge isn't sight readable, that's inherently bad.

Tbh I think that if this becomes a fad it will work out a lot better overall. I got into a phase of trying lots of random bullet heavens because they were all cheap as hell and it was pretty immediately visible which ones had something interesting behind them and which ones just wanted quick sales, and Balatro et al require more fundamental game design chops to get to that basic level of being playable. I'm sure there will be some low effort knockoffs but I don't think they'll do nearly as well.
