when i started posting stuff on imgur with an account so it wouldn't get purged I didn't initially set it to private by default and randos started leaving comments on like, can check photos. I don't understand the impulse where you see that a stranger is drinking an Oberon and you say "ah, now's my chance to Post"

I'm a survivor of their "anything can be uploaded and displayed at random" phase who won't dare browse it apart from upload/share. Imgur used to have a huuuuge CSAM problem and would show it randomly, for all I know they still do. I'm surprised they didn't get shut down.

I sometimes scroll their Most Popular page when I want to waste a couple of minutes. I guess it's a bit like an image/video centric Reddit melting pot. Unless something changed recently, posts aren't automatically submitted to the public feed without choosing a specific option when uploading, but it seems like a lot of things end up there unintentionally anyway. They've got their own posting culture, stuff like downvoting selfies (except for December 25th), crediting artists wherever possible and only that one specific person with the horrifying name is allowed to post My Little Pony content without being obliterated. It's profoundly silly, but mostly harmless as communities go.

For some reason, a ton of pictures that I've uploaded to my imgur account will show the thumbnail size on my account, but if i try to see them larger/get the link, i just get taken to a 404 page. Kinda frustrating, because I've been using imgur for years.
