the smaller ships have little hp and low troops, they are hyper vulnerable the moment they get hit with a boarding action etc and the ai absolutely loves to spam those at anything vulnerable.

Yeah, I never really developed a foolproof counter strategy for the Tyranids. I think I settled on increasing my use of escort ships for scouting and Nova Cannons to try to nuke their commanders from as far away as possible. If those giant fleets aren't put down quick they do a lot of damage though, so it's always a rush when you manage to break their "morale" early in a fight like that.

Bracing yourself for them and basically unleashing hell right before they get in close works Chaos wants to use those long range guns and poke at them. Crons I feel have it fairly easy, let them close in on you and open up your star waves/aoe abilities, then just use your drive teleport to not be where their suicide explosions are

Tyranids in campaign are annoying, doubly so for beginners, because most first time players will play their fleets as brawlers because it's the easiest way to play. Tyranids punish brawlers hard. If you don't know how to play the 'keep away' game, they are a pain in the butt, especially with pure space marines fleets.

It's been a while since I played though.

bunnyofdoom posted:I assume Ad mech with like their novas, lances, stasis and rad bombs are the best? About to hit nids in my campaign AdMech does fine against Tyranids, just keep away from them while firing at them and using all your damage abilities. Also, standarize all the ships you're going to group together i.e try to use ship classes with the same types of armament and speed. My go-to for AdMech is spamming Dictator class cruisers (along with a couple frigates), they are cheap carriers with two launch bays a nova cannon and moderately cheap. For Imperial Navy, I start the campaign mixing Dictator and Dominator class cruisers, but by the point of the Tyranid invasions, I just spam Mars class battlecruisers, who are basically the Dictator and Dominator mixed up together. Later on, when battles get too big to handle that many carriers, maybe I will mix some grand cruisers to act as line ships. That's just me though, the chaos campaign taught me how to manage carrier groups and I love them. Grammarchist posted:That was basically my go-to, yeah. Space Marines suffer against Tyranids because boarding actions are weak against them, so you will just have to keep your distance while shooting broadsides to the enemies that jump too close, rinse and repeat. It takes longer and you get more damage in the process than with the other two imperial fleets but it works in a pinch. Angry Lobster fucked around with this message at 07:52 on Mar 1, 2024 |

Nids are really strong up close, and you need to close to board Punishing them at range or setting up punishments as they close works best. Torpedos down their throat as they try to charge in is satisfying.

Tyranids are a pain in close combat but quite vulnerable to area of effect attacks, particularly nova cannons. Also you want to focus on Psynapse creatures since if you can knock out all of those then the rest of the fleet will go feral and run away with only a little damage.

Something I found while playing this week are that defense platforms are your best friend when facing Tyranids on the defense. So, first off, you know that the nids will just go straight at them at the start of the battle, letting you set an ambush easily. 2ndly, they have the escort pulse ability. So, as soon as they come under fire, pop it, reveal the enemy fleet, and drop nova/plasma/torps on em. As well, I found the nids lose turrets really fast so bombers are great, and target the synapse creatures first. That more than anything saved my rear end when I had like 8 invasions all at once.

bunnyofdoom posted:Something I found while playing this week are that defense platforms are your best friend when facing Tyranids on the defense. Tyranids lose "turrets" fast because their number of turrets is directly tied to their current shield value - they don't have permanent ones. This does lead to some weirdness in bomber/torpedo usage compared to everyone else, as you can't just sit at long range stealthed using fighters to neutralize turrets before sending in bombers, because there aren't any to neutralize. On the other hand, effects that instantly drop shields also immediately render them incredibly vulnerable to bombers/torpedoes, but obviously those also generally require you to get moderately close in order to drop them.

Hey Grey, dunno if you noticed, but some of your fleet commanders have unlocked some upgrade slots, but also, in battle, the Space Marines have a 2nd Lightning strike that IIRC bypasses shields call "For the Chapter" that is an order, and is only limited by the amount of troops on your ships. All lightning strike bonuses also apply to it. So you can literally do lightning strike twice in a row from each space marine ship.
