Hero of the soviet union.
Accidental destroyer of planets

In the grim darkness of the 41st Millenium, there is only war.

That’s especially true in this case, as we are dealing with the kilometer long ships that ply the void between worlds, and try to murder each other in the most hostile conditions known to man.
This is Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2, and we’re going to be taking the helm of these ships.

BFG: Armada 2 is a real time strategy game with a turn based campaign. We will be moving giant ships around space, blowing stuff up and listening to men with very deep voices shouting at each other about who worships the god emperor the hardest, and how they're all about to die. Gloriously, for the aforementioned God Emperor.
Okay. let's back up,

What the hell is Warhammer 40,000?

I’m going to assume you’ve been living under a rock for the last 40 years, and give you the extreme cliff notes background.
Warhammer 40k started as a tabletop game back in the 80’s, its now the dominating force in the industry despite not actually being any good for the last 20 of those. Okay, maybe my own personal leanings are coming through here, but rules wise, Mantic, Legion and pretty much anything else have beaten anything Games Workshop have put out in a long time.
Why is it so popular? The Lore. The lore is amazing as long as you love stupid over the top sci fi - this is what invented the idea of Grimdark, where there are no good guys, only death.

Ten thousand years ago, the immortal God Emperor decided to rebrand humanity after ten thousand years or so of the “age of Strife” where humanity lost most of its tech and ability to travel the stars.
To help him forge the new Imperium of Man, he created twenty(one - it’s complicated) ten foot tall superhumans, each with their own legion of 8 foot tall slightly less superhuman soldiers.
The problem is that all space travel is based on moving through another dimension called the Warp (or the immaterium if you feel fancy). This makes interstellar travel possible, but it is inhabited by literal demons and dark gods who may or may not feed on souls.

These gods corrupt half the remaining Primarchs and lead by Horus start a civil war. The Imperium wins, but not before Horus mortally wounds the Emperor and he’s put into the golden throne to preserve what’s left so he can continue to guide mankind for all eternity. (or to keep the corpse alive so everyone can navigate by his physical death scream)

Yeah, That went well

Ten thousand years later, and humanity is trying to not get killed by all the hostile forces in the universe, as well as trying to stop people learning about, and then getting corrupted by the forces of Chaos - the aforementioned dark gods.
Of course, this means the imperium of man is a happy place that is in no way a fascist-feudal theocracy that relies on inquisitors to kill up to and including entire planets. No, this is not the case at all…..

Jump forward to now, and Abbadon, the kind-of leader of the Chaos forces is about to launch the 13th Black crusade to defeat the Imperium and feed all of humanity's souls to his dark gods. In front of his stand the fortress world of Cadia, a militarized world that guards the entrance to the Eye of Terror - a rent in space where the real world and the warp meet.

First up, I’m going to play through the prologue - this is the in game tutorial, but it also has a huge amount of cutscenes and back story thrown in before we then move on to the Imperial campaign!

So, enough waffle - let’s get this ship going!

Wait, how did that last part do anything? If a group of ships had the energy potential to push something into a planet, wouldn't they inherently have the ability to do as much damage to a planet by crashing into it themselves?

The Blackstone Fortress is a special super weapon so it probably had some secondary effect beyond the physical impact.

Yeah, in the first game they're literally running around deleting planets if you can't keep a handle on things. Even a busted one is going to have some Scifi Umph behind it.

Still wish they had gone for a weird mixed force Xeno campaign to go with the Imperial one. Dark Eldar, Orks, and Tau could totally team up! Or Tau could hitch their wagons to the Necron cause!

I did like how the opening tutorial and scenes of the Imperial campaign are of failure. Its okay to lose occasionally, you don't have to reload.

The imperial campaign begins with some poor sod who has been lost in the warp for 800 years dropping back into another hellish fight.

The game then walks me through the campaign turns.

I think you should be changing your engagement range setting. IIRC, Imp ships are better close in brawlers while Chaos are long range snipers

Hey the episode 2 link doesn't work.

Other than that looking forward to this, the imperial campaign in particular is a lot of fun with its combination of things to manage.

I can't remember, was he promoted to Lord Admiral at the end of the last game?

Today I push on to clear the remains of the Cadia sector of the worst of my chaotic foes.

I only lose a few Space Marines. They are easily replaceable, right?

Never really liked the cutscenes with the 'moving' picture effect. Feels a bit... Well, cheapening of something that could have been simply better in stills?

Regardless, this LP has inspired me to give this another go. While listening to a podcast or two while I'm at it.

Also provides good opportunities for coming up with stupidly arrogant names for the ships.

Yeah, the cutscene choice is a odd one.

And you also bring up a very good point I didn't even realise - if we can rename ships - lets get some good names in!

Litany of Litanies' Litany, The Occasional Crusader, and The Canticle for Tarvitz if we get some space marine vessels.

The Neverending Hail of Devastation, The Unending Torrent of Fury, The Ten Thousand Fists of Vengeance, The Unyielding Lance of Judgment for proper broadsides gunship Imperial Navy vessels (or lance ship for the last one).

The Invincible II, The Indestructible II, Indefatigable II, etc. for your expendable escort ships. Every time one explodes, name a new escort as the same name but one number higher than before.

The 502 Bad Gateway, The 401 Unauthorized, The 403 Forbidden, and The 404 Not Found for Adeptus Mechanicus ships.

Im not sure how similar to the board game it is but ramming in this game is heavily weighted to ship size and a smaller ship is pretty much always going to do little damage to a bigger ship while taking a ton of damage in return. By contrast a bigger ship can easily demolish a smaller ship while taking little damage in return. I think this is true of all the ships in the game except for the ork fleet. This is why your recent attempts to ram with your scout ships have been so ineffective.

Minor correction, that Space Marine ship should be named the Revengeful Spirit. Don't want people thinking Zeke's flagship is showing up.
