Seems to me like the one thing that a Bond actor truly needs is a natural charismatic charm. ATJ just doesn't have that. I found him likable enough in Kick-rear end, but otherwise he's felt like a pretty blank slate to me.

That's pretty much the plot of Thunderball. It's been like 2 decades since I read it but for some reason I have a pretty vivid memory of how the book spends 5 pages talking about what he would eat for breakfast every day before M sends him away to the clinic for being too fat. Also the bond girls kills the main bad guy after he gets the drop on Bond.
