Finally got around to Final Wars today. Yep! That's a bad movie. It has some charm, both in the greatness of Captain Gordon and the way it's basically everything that was cool in the early 2000s, but the story is trying to do things better movies did, without understanding why those movies did them. Human civilization is wiped out offscreen, but no-one cares much and an old guy can still go on a road trip with Godzilla's son with no worries. (Similarly, no-one cares when all their squad mates get gunned down. Not so much as a "You bastard!" from it.) It's a poorly plotted mess, and the monster action only really gets going halfway in. It references Monster Zero, but it feels more like Destroy All Monsters, a film that only exists to jam in more monsters.
