Im Roman Catholic and actually agree with this. The point of the movie is to emphasize the suffering of Christ. If you define "torture porn" as the subgenre of 2000s movies like Saw and Hostel people got up in arms about" it kinda awkwardly fits, but if torture porn is "the point of this movie is to show a man being graphically tortured", then it is absolutely a torture porn movie.

I remember people got really up in arms over the torture in the movie but thematically it fits and isn't just gory stuff for edgelords to check out (like a lot of "torture porn" was in the 00s).

The Brave Little Toaster is a horror movie. When you’re not around, inanimate objects come to life. Not only do they stalk you, but this also means every mug you’ve ever chipped, every car you’ve totaled, every toilet you’ve ever used was a sentient being with thoughts and feelings.

You can twist any movie into any genre. But the fact that it is the HORROR thread means there's a definition of horror because we have it as a genre of film. And unless that definition is "all movies" then certain ones by default must be excluded.

It's kinda like that Mary Poppins trailer that was recut into a horror movie. But if you watch Mary Poppins it is clearly not a horror movie.

I’d read Tim Powers’ take on Mary Poppins. Supernatural influence coming into mess with children, historical setting, secret cabal of magic chimneysweeps, sound like his stuff.

You are proving my point: I said you can twist any movie into any genre. But Mary Poppins is very clearly not a horror movie unless you apply the "Ill twist any movie into horror" thing. And at that point all movies are horror movies, in which case this should just be a genchat movie thread. But its a HORROR thread because thats a genre that exists.

Went to a fan premiere of dune 2 and first the movie was 20 minutes late to start and then for the first 10 minutes of the movie the audio was delayed by half a second so everything felt off. They fixed it and at the end of the movie they handed my partner two free passes and me two free passes. I’ve been using those since then.

im glad you and your partner got free passes. My deepest sympathies you had to sit through Dune 2 (shoutout to Walken for the most "phoned-in-i-just-want-a-paycheck" performance of all time tho)

hey look,
a post
I watched Dark Harvest last night after seeing it mention in the thread a bit ago. Wasn't too impressed with it. It's an aesthetic blog on tumblr dedicated to S.E. Hinton and pumpkins in movie form. Whole thing felt superficial, which coulda been OK if it had likable characters but every performance is pretty rote. The guy playing the sheriff at least understood the assignment but he still missed the mark.

There was a few interesting ideas buried in there. Taking the cursed town motif and reinterpreting it as an war economy was there at the edges. I agree with the one poster who said the movie starts falling apart in the second half. Though I think its less the moralizing and more the Harvester's Guild is never actually feels threatening.

I dunno. Its ok, 7/10.

Catholicism is a super power in the Amityville Horror, too.

As a kid growing up Catholic, I was super bummed nobody ever taught me how to perform an exorcism or even how to make my own holy water.

My favorite thing about When Evil Lurks is honestly something I pop off for any time it happens, which is when it's very clear that the world we're inhabiting is a sidestep from our "real world" and everyone in the narrative knows about a bunch of things that are commonplace to them but the extent to which it is not our world just unfolds gradually for the viewer. To a lesser extent, same thing with It Follows and the ambiguity of its setting/time period.

nobody taught you bc the former can only be done by priests and needs Vatican approval and a bunch of pre-requisites like visiting independant psychs first, and the latter can only be done by priests.

It took me a bit to get into the movie but when the Grandma started talking about demons and specifically breaks one of the rules and then says "don't worry, it won't happen to me" it clicked for me.
