I mean, yeah, and the original story is pretty close to a Ketchum joint but try telling other people that.

I remember people got really up in arms over the torture in the movie but thematically it fits and isn't just gory stuff for edgelords to check out (like a lot of "torture porn" was in the 00s).

The Brave Little Toaster is a horror movie. When you’re not around, inanimate objects come to life. You can twist any movie into any genre. But the fact that it is the HORROR thread means there's a definition of horror because we have it as a genre of film. And unless that definition is "all movies" then certain ones by default must be excluded. It's kinda like that Mary Poppins trailer that was recut into a horror movie. But if you watch Mary Poppins it is clearly not a horror movie.

I’d read Tim Powers’ take on Mary Poppins. Supernatural influence coming into mess with children, historical setting, secret cabal of magic chimneysweeps, sound like his stuff.

You are proving my point: I said you can twist any movie into any genre. But Mary Poppins is very clearly not a horror movie unless you apply the "Ill twist any movie into horror" thing. And at that point all movies are horror movies, in which case this should just be a genchat movie thread. But its a HORROR thread because thats a genre that exists.

I watched Dark Harvest last night after seeing it mention in the thread a bit ago. Wasn't too impressed with it. It's an aesthetic blog on tumblr dedicated to S.E. Hinton and pumpkins in movie form. Whole thing felt superficial, which coulda been OK if it had likable characters but every performance is pretty rote. The guy playing the sheriff at least understood the assignment but he still missed the mark. There was a few interesting ideas buried in there. Taking the cursed town motif and reinterpreting it as an war economy was there at the edges. I agree with the one poster who said the movie starts falling apart in the second half. Though I think its less the moralizing and more the Harvester's Guild is never actually feels threatening. I dunno. Its ok, 7/10.

I like Dastmalchian a lot, too, and I'm happy he's found a ton of success in the last few years. When he popped up in Oppenheimer I let out a little internal cheer.

Catholicism is a super power in the Amityville Horror, too. As a kid growing up Catholic, I was super bummed nobody ever taught me how to perform an exorcism or even how to make my own holy water.

My favorite thing about When Evil Lurks is honestly something I pop off for any time it happens, which is when it's very clear that the world we're inhabiting is a sidestep from our "real world" and everyone in the narrative knows about a bunch of things that are commonplace to them but the extent to which it is not our world just unfolds gradually for the viewer. To a lesser extent, same thing with It Follows and the ambiguity of its setting/time period.

It took me a bit to get into the movie but when the Grandma started talking about demons and specifically breaks one of the rules and then says "don't worry, it won't happen to me" it clicked for me.
