You are not allowed to just enjoy things anymore, all things must be monetized. The major sports leagues did not locate a franchise in Vegas for decades because they didn't want to present the appearance of impropriety, and it took less than a decade to knock all that poo poo down.

Sports radio this year around here used to be wall to wall coverage of baseball spring training, now it's two hour long gambling prospectus shows advising you to lay a bet now on the 2024 Super Bowl winner (Dallas is 13 to 1!).

We're going to leave so many people with crippling gambling addictions once this is all said and done. Half the screen is going to be stupid prop bets with insane odds that trigger the 10% of people predisposed to compulsive betting to throw money away into the skinner box until they're out homeless on the streets. I'm sure they've got services on the backend analyzing which bets are the most profitable and presenting them to users so they continue to lose money. I know other people in this thread have talked about legalizzed gambling turning them off of sports and I have to agree that it's getting beyond ridiculous at this point, just sheer naked capitalism exploiting peoples addictions in such a gross way.

At what point will this cause professional sports to implode? I know there is still plenty of premium consumer left, but at some point the small market teams will have to start falling away, right? Eventually it will just be like 4 or 8 big market “Harlem Globetrotters” and maybe a handful of Washington Generals left floating around on life support.

Or are sports teams too much of a prestige item for the mega rich to ever truly fail at this point? So it will just be sad empty stadiums with mostly skyboxes for private showings to all the mega rich?

I think the number one lesson of the 21st C is that nothing ever implodes, just gets shittier and shittier

It turns out you can call everyone a mark for participating in capitalism, but ironically they must participate in it to survive.

I stopped giving a poo poo, partly because the Sixers are bad and their window is closed (assuming it was ever really open to begin with) and because the whole league is super corrupt

Intel spun off their fabs (who the gently caress knows why they did this but it means they're making chips for whoever now) and this looks like it's funding for the fab portion specifically. Not terrible, I guess. And they're even building something somewhere sensible instead of in a desert.

My favorite discovery about sports betting is if you win they can just say "whoops, those odds were obviously an error" and not pay out in most states, lol.

weirdly they never seem to do that when people lose.
