CBC posted:

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has gone to the Supreme Court to seek an injunction against fish harvesters who swarmed Confederation Building on Wednesday as part of an ongoing protest over fishery regulations that has led to the postponement of the provincial budget.

...

Video from the scene shows public servants struggling to get through the melee and get to work. At one point, Meghan McCabe, director of communications for Premier Andrew Furey, tried to get through the crowd but was pushed back by a pair of irate protesters hurling expletives.

"Get back. Don't be stupid," one yelled as McCabe walked backward away from them.

...

The hundreds of protesters are fish harvesters and supporters, who have been lobbying government to open markets to outside buyers since early March.

As it stands, they can sell their catches only to buyers inside the province at a price agreed upon by the Fish, Food & Allied Workers union and the Association of Seafood Producers.

And apparently similar things might happen with the Saskatchewan budget today

She's in the top 10 least useless NDP MPs but not like near the top. She was not a very effective left candidate in either of her previous leadership runs, far too polite and deferential, too much graduate school not enough grassroots.

Classism is cool and good now?!

Also I'd bet those are operators, not fishermen. The protest is about how the boats currently are only able to sell to in province processors, at set prices, this ensures a stable fishery and keeps jobs in province. The owners want to sell overseas, as they will pay more for certain catches, and will take as much stock as possible. This is a maritime problem as old as time, it comes up whenever demand increases. Greedy shortsighted owners see a high price elsewhere and want to flood the market. If they do so, prices will collapse, and all the inland workers will be cut out of the deal and those plants will close. The end result is that everyone is poorer, and the economy is weaker, and the average landing is worth less than it is today.

These idiots don't understand that you want to slightly under supply the market when prices are high, even if it means selling in a controlled manner at slightly below market prices, it keeps prices high and ensures a more profitable venture.

Which is insane, because the history of the maritimes is that a lack of supply management ended the most profitable and productive fishery. Like, you'd have to be willfully ignorant of history to not understand this stuff.

Cool thanks for explaining, couldn't find anyone else detailing anything beyond the existence of the deal. In that case it makes complete sense that those boys were the fishing equivalent of middle managers lol. I was hesitant to believe them in the first place since the union was involved in making the deal but also so so so many unions are completely compromised that I wouldn't have been surprised

To be clear I'm not well versed on the ins and outs of this particular protest, but I used to live in a tiny fishing village and am very familiar with this sort of scenario and the various actors. Boat owners often get called fishermen, and they do much to promote that working class image, but they are owners, not workers. Some captains are also owners though, so it isn't always clear-cut. It is similar to how the "truckers" in the convoy stuff were mostly small business tyrants and not actual truckers.

This deal is in place to protect everyone's income, from boat to cannery, but the owners always want more, and don't care if a short-term increase in profit leads to massive downturn for the rest, and also them, but later.

Looks like about a week ago the fishermen's union - FFAW, a Unifor affiliate - sided with the protestors and now calls for a lift on all the restrictions. VR is completely right re: the historic lack of control devestating the Atlantic provinces so that's disappointing. And the Newfie gov is pressing ahead with the budget after getting the protestors injuncted anyway although I don't think the budget actually has anything to do with the in-province order

I did notice a fun fact in the injunction article where CBC quoted a John Efford Jr., who I'm pretty sure is the same John Efford Jr., son of a former Newfie Fishery minister, who was fined for illegally harvesting squid in 1999. Not relevant but lol
