why would China bother with nukes

they would just randomly shut down infrastructure with cyber attacks. they wouldn’t be 100% successful, but they don’t have to be

no explosion, no easy attributable source without a long technical explanation that could be dismissed or argued over, with abundant finger pointing domestically and public anger at government for not fixing broken infrastructure. infrastructure repairs have been shown to be slow and expensive, with limited resources to be able to handle transformer repairs or major water works.

all of this perpetrated on a populace that is in general distrusting of one another, largely unwilling to pursue collective action, and prone to individual violence with a massive amounts of firearms

it would be chaos, with not a single shot fired (by China at least)

I think what would work well to "destroy" a nation is this:

- Destroy infrastructure for roads, trains, electricity, internet, water, healthcare, and anything else a society needs to function.
- Destroy manufacturing ability within the target nation
- Destroy a sense of patriotism, nationalism and willingness for citizens to fight for their community.
- Destroy the ability of young people to own a home or feel that they have a future to fight for. Increasing inequality in any regard helps as well.
- Destroy people's trust in state institutions, and in their country's democratic processss.
- Destroy the ability of the country/MIC to produce large amounts of military goods, particularly ammunition. Bonus if they are reliant on other countries for base resources needed to produce said goods.
- Destroy the country's ability to maintain their critical military equipment.
- Reduce the country's currency power
- Destroy the trust that other countries have in your target nation.
- Destroy the country's illusion of effective security/safety/power projection by seeing their military humiliated by supposedly weaker opponents.

If China wanted to "destroy" America and achieve these above goals, they can do so with this powerful technique:
- waiting

It's an older couple that must have a ton of money because they bought a house further down the street to live in while this one is getting built. The underground portion is the entire footprint of the house and the neighbor said it was gonna be like half bunker half normal rooms. Right now it's still a big hole in the ground but it has big air exchanger type pipes coming up. I'm hoping to catch them at some point when they are at the property and ask them about it. But yeah I would imagine just the underground part is costing what a really nice house here would cost because digging what's effectively a basement out in this area is almost unheard of.

quote:

The U.S. has deported tens of thousands of military veterans since the passage of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. Some estimates point to at least 94,000. A majority of the service members deported were legal residents who committed at least three misdemeanors, making them deportable.

In many cases, they were highly decorated veterans, who came back to the U.S. scarred by PTSD and partially or fully disabled. The law does not allow the government to take any of that into account on the decision, and people have been deported for charges such as disorderly conduct, drunk driving, theft, and several other misdemeanors renamed “aggravated felonies.”

the us can't even aspire to verhoven's ridiculous fascist satire lol. or, perhaps it's more accurate to say it accelerates beyond satire.

quote:

Contrary to popular belief, military service does not automatically confer citizenship. As a result of our nation’s draconian and punitive immigration laws, immigrant military veterans – some of whom have been wounded during service and/or decorated – are still subject to deportation.

the republic did a thing where if you were already a citizen with land and went off to fight, when you finally came back your farm was now a weed infested wasteland and you had nowhere near enough money to survive long enough to fix it, so you had no choice but to sell it to a predatory land consolidator for peanuts and then live in a lovely apartment

I imagine that revolting and couping after getting rugpulled by the government isn't as feasible as it was in Rome since warfare is done with incredibly capital intensive technologies rather than you and the boys vs. them and their boys. A paramilitary private force in ancient times had roughly the same technology available to the state military and it was mostly a question of numbers and logistics, but you're not going to muster an air wing unless you can get them to defect, which has a ton of logistical problems related to maintenance and supplies.

Back then, those guys could pick their swords and shields back up if the Romans pissed them off by screwing them over.

Now? Well, there's no legion of X ethnic group that's going to rise in revolt. The US can ship every immigrant veteran back to their home countries and not have to bother with the lifelong medical or societal costs of their injuries. It's cheaper that way. That's what matters in the end now. Whether you are generating value for the empire or not.

yeah but this only holds as long as there is a state military. by the end of the republic it had essentially evaporated entirely in the sense that it had previously existed. when a state fully commits to loving over the soldiers of its citizen army it eventually stops having one. this is what happened in Rome: citizens who were called into service were expected to mostly provide their own equipment, and citizens who were so poor that they couldn't afford a helmet and a bag of rocks to throw at people were exempt from military service. well, things eventually got so bad that there simply weren't enough citizens that weren't so poor as to be exempt to fill the need for soldiers that Rome had. this problem was "solved" by rich people paying for the equipment and wages needed to recruit armies from the poor, who were happy to join because they were desperate for a paycheck. The inevitable consequence of this, though, is that these new armies were not state armies. They were loyal to the rich guy that bought their equipment and paid their wages.

the US system is even more fragile because the citizen army is all-volunteer. they don't need to impoverish all of their citizens to the point where they're exempt, they just have to make the army such an unappealing prospect that no one will willingly join. and given that i keep hearing about how soldiers are paid barely enough money to buy food(which any functioning military in history would have provided for them) and live in decaying barracks full of black mold, it doesn't sound like that's far off. faced with the eventual choice between actually paying them or allowing the almighty hand of the free market to take over, which do you think the current ruling class will choose?
