IMO the reason for Macron posturing is EU leadership thing. As in Germany's response to threats is to back down, our response to threats is to threaten back. That's about it. He got russians somewhat rattled at least.

The French are right up there with Russians and the British when it comes to nostalgia for great power status. Macron tried to play the peace broker and got rudely brushed off. This made him appear weak, so now he's trying on a different tack and it seems to be working. A while ago the Kremlin didn't care about France at all, now it can't stop talking about it.

Vladimir Putin addressed Russians after the presidential elections, expressing gratitude for their ’support’, which he deemed more important than a formal victory. He commended the intensity and responsibility of the campaign and praised voters for understanding the elections’ significance and respecting civic duty. Putin thanked election commissions for their ’competence and adherence to laws’. He pledged to justify the voters’ trust and promised to consider all candidates’ ideas for Russia’s development. Putin concluded by highlighting the unity displayed during the elections, depicting Russia as one big friendly family.

That's not true, though... The US admin doesn't want the Russian government to fail catastrophically, as in be toppled due to its failures, but nobody in any position of authority anywhere wants that. They would like Russia to lose, but in the form of a negotiated withdrawal based on a cost benefit analysis. Which is perhaps naive, but there really isn't any other option.

That's just brinkmanship with extra steps.

If the US response to russian aggression and expansionism is to chicken the gently caress out, that's going to have some consequences for international relations. Some very beneficial to Russia, and not so much the US.

Yeah some people are desperate to find secret masterplans that prove they were right about AmeriKKKan intentions toward Ukraine all along.

The simplest explanation is that its an election year and Biden is scared that high oil prices will hurt his prospects.

He's right on that. But he has lost leverage over Ukraine due to the shenanigans in the House, so needs to find a way to provide Ukraine with other means of hitting Russia back. Right now they have no incentive to stop.
