Now, attempt to defeat me!
And I shall become a living legend!
It's pretty obvious Ohtani knowingly paid off debts to an illegal bookmaker and now the whole Dodgers organization is trying (poorly) to cover it up. Hammer needs to fall down on the whole team. Any Dodgers fans who spent the last five years incessantly complaining about the Astros evading punishment for the sign-stealing scandal would do the logically and morally consistent thing and agree with me.

Actually the play is to run extremely slow, the throw beats you by such a huge margin the 2b has no choice but to stand in front of the bag waiting to tag you out and get called for blocking.

"you can't block ANY part of the base" is insane

Like if the throw takes you toward the first base side I guess you're just hosed

I wonder if they ever considered how bad it would look to call the runner safe when he was thrown out by ten feet

That's exactly what happened in the play above, he was out by such a huge margin idk what the 2b is supposed to do but sit there and wait for the runner.

Oh sorry, I wasn't sure if that's what you were referencing.

On paper I think the rule is fine for egregious blocking like when a 2b gets down on a knee and compeltely blocks the plate but what Lindor did there seems fine to me. The runner was out by a mile it doesn't really matter that Lindor had his foot there.

At the very least it should be enforced the way home plate blocking rules are, not if you have a toe in front of the base while the guy on first is glancing in your direction he gets the base

e: I guess that's another reason to have a long spring training, so umps can make these weird calls and the league office can call them afterwards and say "hey dumbshit" about a game that doesn't matter

Intruder fucked around with this message at 21:17 on Mar 21, 2024

AndrewP
Apr 21, 2010

the only thing I can think is that the umps are instructed to call it when it's close during Spring Training so they get a wide array of examples to kind of see when it should and should not be called

I have no clue if that happens but why else would you be so quick to call that

Noblest of all dogs is the hot-dog; it feeds the hand that bites it.
The runner even got his foot to the base at the end of the slide. Dumb call.

I understand the blocking home plate rule, since catchers were getting obliterated, but what's the justification for the second base rule besides inflating stolen bases?

More non-Shohei news, I'm pretty happy with the Lorenzen signing. For a team with three of its best starters out for at least the first half of the year, he seems like a really good pickup, especially at $4.5m plus incentives. Kinda weird he was still unsigned if that's all he settled for.

Players weren't happy about injuries caused by guys blocking the bag: https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-gives-umpires-new-guidance-for-base-blocking-rule

In the Athletic article about this, they brought up this play where Luis Robert sprained his wrist and was hurt the rest of the year.

Making you happy for a buck since 199X
Allowing a fielder to lay his leg across the entire base to prevent the runner from easily touching it was always stupid as hell and also it's always been illegal. It's less a brand new rule and more a clarification of a rule that's been on the books for 120 years.

Blocking the runner's path to the base with your glove with the ball inside it, however, is called a "tag" and someone should maybe explain this concept to the umpires.

Unless the infielder is wearing size 30 cleats having just his foot in front of the bag when setting up to make a tag should not be interference. If he drops to a knee to block the entire plate with his shin that is interference and asking to get spiked.

A play where the runner is out by a mile but ruled safe due to defensive interference has finally eclipsed replay ruling a runner out because he came off the bag by a millimeter for a fraction of a second as the dumbest thing. Totally antithesis to the spirit of the game when kids playing schoolyard stickball can get the call right and MLB cannot.
