it's extremely weird how much of the snappy action feel they removed from DD1 when that was one of the best things about it. they added long uncancelable animations to everything archer does, made every bit of terrain vacuum you into traversal animations that take away your controls, and removed the core dodge skill while not giving any way out of an infinite stunlock from the first time you get hit, so you now handle more like a vehicle or a horror game protag now. I hope other classes feel better because basically every change from DD1 feels like a nerf so far

It feels really good when you finally get back to town after a long outing where your entire party is Heavy with loot and can deposit it all. Ended up just using my first fast travel crystal to return to the city instead of trying to make that journey back with everyone Heavy.

During the outing I encountered a Minotaur and an Ogre. The former was trivially easy as an Archer. The only time it threatened me was with the easy to dodge charges. Just shot off its horns. Ogre was a little trickier since I missed dodging one of his jumps and it almost killed me.

I also encountered some sort of dragon/wyvern fighting a gryphon. I did not fight them.

Saurians have actually proven the biggest threat to my Archer so far, since they can often hit me with their spear even if I sprint away, and I don't think I have any "dodge sideways" or "block" options. Especially in enclosed areas where I can't just make space. Came very close to dying when one stun-locked me in a series of spear stabs. Hopefully this "enemies are more likely to target you" passive (plus the upgraded taunt) I just got for my pawn helps with stuff like that.

I also got the thong pants lol. Every time my character climbs a ledge she flashes me (Archers flip when they climb some ledges, don't know if other vocations have that animatiom).

Anyone with a similar situation or setup have a trip report? Maybe how they're feeling after ten hours or so? I don't need 60+ fps from every game I play, but I think my main worry is just that it seems a bit unstable at this point and I don't wanna hit a cool set piece and suddenly have to deal with a very variable frame rate. I think this game has the juice so it's not gonna take much to convince me.

I’ve got a fairly similar computer - an i7 that was brand new in 2020 and an 8gb 3070 - and it’s been like you describe in outdoor areas for the most part, I’ve fought some gryphons/ogres/a troll or something with no noticeable frame drops. The main city is pretty fuckin choppy at ~30 FPS but I think it feels so obvious because I’m so used to 120+ FPS in other games, but it’s not really impacting play in any meaningful way. Caves, waterfalls, etc have all also had no impact, really does just seem to be about the city

I've been playing Thief and you can cancel into the quickstep and it makes it feel very snappy - you can even do the "wail on an enemy until they wind up and then quickly quickstep out of there" like in Bloodborne. I wonder if they made the other classes a little more deliberate to make Thief the characteristically dexterous one.

traveling pawn ads are probably the main thing i dislike about the game so far outside of performance

I've got a 3080 and ryzen 5600x and was getting 60 and higher in wilderness but dipping to 25-50 in city depending on turning or where and inconsistency is more annoying to me than any given framerate stable. I stuck it on 30 taking the hot on wilderness areas but I got up and got some water and came back and completely forgot it's "slower" now. Pretty stable 30fps in cities and extremely solid 30 everywhere else. I could probably turn things down and get somewhat better in cities at higher frame rate but I'd rather have max .

As a bonus I can still have browser and whatever else open.

Really liking Battahl, even though all of the thieves around here are way too fuckin quick and evasive for my warrior. My pawns were eating poo poo constantly when I first arrived but they're holding their own now. I think switching the pawn from fighter to warrior helped a lot. They seem better at playing it.

After making some decent progress in this game I do have some complaints. In DD1, there were a good number of bullshit quests. Talk to this person at this location at this very specific time. Slowly tail some dude through the city. Escort this child. Awkwardly sneak through the castle. Not really the stuff I'm here for. However, there were also plenty of quests that took you to interesting, unique locations to fight monsters. Check out the lightly-puzzled sunken lizard temple. Siege a goblin fort. Track down some cultists in an undead crypt. Find a witch in some spooky misty woods.

DD2 only seems to have the former. Exclusively lame bullshit quests and zero neat, unique secondary spaces. You find caves scattered around occasionally, but they're just that: caves. Featureless, cramped caves. Every time. The overworld is great but I want to go into neat, different places, be they for a quest or otherwise. Hasn't happened.

There's a clock in the pause menu. The circle around the little map acts as a clock that rotates counter-clockwise. When the sun is at the top it's mid day.

I can't confirm this but it feels like NPC schedules run on quarter days, so for the beggar in question:

Dawn to Midday: Telling stories in the main square
Midday to dusk: At the bar in the slums
Dusk to midnight: Not entirely sure if midnight is the cut-off but he has a house in the common quarter where he locks the door
Midnight to Dawn: His house in the noble quarter

More specific Beggar quest spoilers: I'm not sure how much you can sequence break it but you basically need to go to his house in the common quarter when he is at hi noble quarter house. This should be the only time his door is unlocked and you can grab his beggar clothes

The fight took forever, and I think it didn't help that my level 8 Mage pawn was underleveled (I immediately replaced him with a level 15 one afterwards, since that's my level).

Is that Gryphon attack a scripted part of the quest where you deliver a letter to Melve via oxcart?

Speaking of that quest, it had an hourglass in the quest log. I did it immediately because I wasn't sure if that meant it was timed (though from the description it doesn't seem like it should be timed, so the hourglass may have just been referring to the need to take the cart at a specific time).

The majority of my hires have been from non-goons, but I think it's mostly due to my pawn being a conventionally attractive woman rather than exceptional stats.

I'm slowly maxing out her equipment though, so I think by now she actually is pretty good for her level.

I had a few random but mostly goons I think. When I run into those summoning stones that have a certain archetype, I've seen pawns with hundreds of likes already. Maybe just because they're higher level and a lot of people just love taking out a big bruiser? I saw one zone that had 5 different PhoenixSomethinf, like a whole family, Phoenix mother, Phoenix father, PhoenixDaughter. Almost makes me think someone is multi boxing the game to have matching pawns bc they all had the same armor or aesthetics.
