frolf is a great hobbies for this

just chucking a frisbee through the park

no tee times

free

$20 at play it again sports and you have a life time of equipment

tons of random doubles, meet people, community

but yeah, there are not many hobbies like that and if you are not close to a course, it gets car/time dependent

but yeah, smartphone/video game/posting are just so convenient and dumps endorphins.

I grew spider plants in a windowless office for years

now I have a table at home with some grow lights pointed at it which is enough to grow hot pepper plants indoors

my parents are retired and got real big into gardening and canning

american culture, perpetuated by protestant "values," makes identity and self-realization heavily intertwined with the sort of work you do, your job title, and your income and serves as arguably the most important hierarchy in social status. because we aren't given the room to create a sense of self independent of work, people become lost the instant they aren't working. it's not just people being unable to retire or falling apart after they do, it's probably the largest root cause of why young men are thrashing out and becoming right wing idiots, because our patriarchal society's identity and placement of a man is pretty much "job and wife" and no one can actually get the job part of this, so the only thing they cling onto is the entitlement and feeling of self-fulfillment that a wife would give them, and when they can't get that because women are like "hm maybe i dont want to marry a person that would beat me how about some like, standards or something" men individually cannot fathom a different world. without work, or even "good" work, people in america just fall the gently caress apart because when you make everything in american society about work, it's only going to function if people can!

A good post.

Plenty I'd like to do but I am exhausted after work. Easy to be a passive consumer in a consumer economy.

I went to a brewery once where the owner/founder was doing all the tours. He showed us all his brewpots and bottling machines and so on and so forth and someone asked him how he got started and he was like "I did homebrew as a hobby, and I kept buying stuff, and eventually I had to open a brewery to justify the expense"

mf just kept buying bigger and bigger metal tanks until suddenly he was a business owner

thrifting is a cheap, fun & easy hobby, and you can even make money at it if you're industrious enough to resell online (I'm not). Plus it's good for the environment.

learning to cook basic stuff is cheap, fun & easy. Same with growing food if you have access to a garden or a community plot.

libraries have tools to loan out for hobbies; chicago has a gigantic tool library.

many libraries have museum passes for free or discounted visits.
