This would give like 15 - 50% of Americans an excuse to not engage with the uncomfortable “paradox of altruism” and continue on as normal. Didn’t Europeans have about another 10 years of sacrifice and rationing because of the Marshall plan? In the US we pretty much ignore this part of European history.
