newbid stupie?
Hey, anyone else have weird performance issues in extremely specific locations? The armor and weapon vendors and vocation guildmaster in Bakbattahl and the Arborist in Sacred Arbor all cause massive drops to my framerate as I get closer to them, and it's worse if I try to talk to them from certain angles. I've toggled a bunch of settings with minimal impact; anyone else seeing this same behavior?

Also, I looped the game, and updated my pawn from Fuhrer-King Bradley to Alex Louis Armstrong. Maybe I'll ask for more hair variations in the survey, or stronger jawlines.

Just beat the game. Game mostly good, but it needed more enemy variety and more interesting dungeons. And warfarer needs more buttons. Some classes definitely feel weaker than others overall like mystic spearhand, which is fun but is lacking in damage and stagger compared to everything but mage and maybe fighter. Sorcerer, magick archer and warrior are stagger kings that can knockdown just about any enemy on their own, thief, archer, and sorcerer are massive DPS monsters. So I guess what I'm saying is sorcerer is the best vocation in the game.

The strength of mystic spearhead is that it can be immune to everything and make your pawns also immune to everything. It doesn't stagger well or have huge deeps but nothing will ever kill you unless you let it.

Honestly, I can see where you're coming from, and I'll readily admit that my main gripe with the game has to do with the low challenge, and lack of an endgame, so maybe my vision didn't line up with the devs'.
However, I also feel the game fails at setting up a truly emergent world, mainly because of the dire enemy variety, and the simple and dull dungeons.
The only enemy I felt created truly emergent scenarios was the gryphon. It's disruptive and dangerous, and you often don't see it before it's on top of you. Not to mention that it could take you for a ride, literally, to the other side of the map.
The cyclops, on the other hand, almost always went the same way. They even teased that "cyclops bridge" as a thing before launch, and I saw that exactly once, in a place that would have taken me 10 seconds to go around anyway.

Meh, just feels like a whole lot of wasted potential, that's ended up with an overall middling game when we could have had something great.

So Dragon's Dogma.
I think your critiques are absolutely valid, but the game is an iteration of the first, with many improvements, I can't think of anywhere DD2 stumbles that DD1 did better than it,
They did a great job of doing everything 1 did right, but better and I think that's where a lot of the goodwill from goons is coming from.

Other than the endgame the expansion added, layered armor, and the berserk stuff, there's nothing I can even say I liked more in 1.

The feature I most want to see in 3 is more stuff out in the world, whether by hemming in and making the map smaller and more deliberate or juat going bananas adding more detail to a giant map.
There's a few cool quests, npcs, or stuff like "fire the weapon emplacement to open a new path" sprinkled in the world, or dynamic events like an npc asking for an escort or mentioning someone who needs saving but not enough to justify the huge map.

DD1 felt like a little less than half a game built around an ambitious skeleton and fun combat, DD2 feels like 60% of one built on an even better framework.

Mystic Spearhand also has wildly good mobility, and while it lacks in AoE it can deliver good single target damage (especially if you gear it appropriately and abuse charged bolt -> triangle). I feast on pretty much everything, including drakes

Jack, you said that even the base settings this mod has feels a lot better paced than vanilla difficulty? Is that right? I'm planning ahead for a replay since I know what quests to expect now.

I started up a new mage/sorc playthrough using the default settings on this mod and it's been pretty fun so far. My level 10 party rested at a campfire, spotted a chest which happened to have a bunch of basic Saurians around it, and they beat my rear end so badly that I blew through all of my healing consumables to survive repeated fatal blows and needed to go rest again after that single encounter. Would recommend.

Those 2 and the spear twirl core abilities are impossible for me to activate as well. I literally cannot mash fast enough for the twirl, and according to people who can it’s basically so fast that you can’t do anything else

It doesn't seem that way to me, I did it on accident constantly. Probably because I am a shameless button masher

Beat the game and got the True Ending. That was honestly one of the strangest endgames I have experienced in a little while. As much as DD2 improves on 1, I felt everything from the dragon battle through the Everfall right up to the ending in DD1 was far, far more interesting than DD2's endgame ever was.

I'll also join in on the "enemy variety wasn't that great" train.

In short, I liked the first 2/3rds a lot, but for the last third it honestly felt like the game just ran out of ideas. It's a little bit of a disappointment but I'll definitely be back if/once they release a meaty BBI-style DLC.

Warp works best on slow-to-normal enemies. For anything that flies fast or jumps around, it's best to wait until it stops for a moment (or just ambush them)

Don't think I've ever spread bolt either, but tbh I haven't had to. Killing most any target in a few seconds is plenty fast

If you put in your pawn data in the sheet you can protect the range so only you and the sheet creator can edit it and you should be safe from accidents.

Anyone else having a weird issue with the Home Is Where The Hearth Is quest? I've done all but the final step where you talk to Ulrika on the docks of Harve but she isn't showing up there at any hour of day or night? She just stays in a home in the village or stands in the streets and won't give me any more than basic NPC dialogue. I've even tried taking her myself to the docks and even killing and reviving her in case that would fix her but nothing seems to have changed. Not sure what I might have done to cause this problem aside from exhausting her dialogue when she first appeared in Harve.

I never touched any of the magic classes in DD1, and after trying them out in DD2 all I can say is that I was sorely mistaken. It has been incredibly fun to knock poo poo up in the air with a big rear end iceberg. I think Archer pawns are programmed to do trick shots on the enemies you knock into the air too, I found a Timothee Chamolet pawn that loves doing stunts like that.

You need to mash pretty drat quick to activate it, but once its going you can slow down a bit. Same for the similar dagger ability. I do hate the rapid mashing input though, especially if you're spamming it for an extended period on a monster's head or whatever. Needed a drat stamina roborant irl by the time I was done fighting the dragon. Wish they ditched that and instead kept the delayed combo inputs from DD1.

I think I've just had an unfortunate moment that has really soured my opinion of the game. If the whole thing is going to be one save and no ability to undo anything, your game has to be on loving lock without any potential for game breaking bugs.

But here I am, doing a mission for a quest line related to one of the maester vocation skills, and an npc I was supposed to save full on disappeared from existence. Wasn't killed or anything, one second she was there, next moment she was gone forever. The other npc's related to this quest are just standing where she disappeared, refusing to talk about anything relevant. The quest still wants me to escort here even though she doesn't exist. Quest line is, as far as I can tell, completely hosed now with no way to fix it and no way to ever get that maester skill.

Its for a vocation I don't think I'm going to main anyway, but this moment is really going to hang over my head the rest of the time I'm playing, worried that it could happen again at any moment for any quest.

what captured me forcibly and distinctively playing DD:DA (never played without the expansion) was pretty much

1. experiencing an adventuring group of helpful and entertaining pawns enabled by me and my friends' creativity
2. actively climbing all over giant goddamn monsters to savagely whale on their weakspots
3. exploring a world that has intriguing intricacies (especially in quests and npcs) that, whatever the actual implementations are, feel like they enable an impressive possibility space

I think DD2 nailed the poo poo outta those core concepts just like the first, and while I'd have any number of personal opinions and tweaks on its friction design and mechanical conveniences, none of it seemed so off-putting to me personally that it hampered the goodness of those core elements. pretty much I just want more content and diversity to engage with them even more, love dat core

I really, really hope they do something along the lines of DA, that they've gotten the resources to pursue that and won't be dissuaded from bothering by a maybe not-so-down-for-it generalized response, as much as I understand and get where that comes from and think there's a lotta validity in those feelings

ain't nuthin' quite like dragon's dogma, for better or for worse haha

This is basically how I feel. I only just played DD: DA last month but after the rough start that game has (2 is a big improvement there) I was hooked. I really like that 2 didn't just cave and give you an eternal ferrystone or multiple port crystal stations because grueling-yet-meaningful traversal and asynchronous multiplayer elements that enrich said traversal are why Death Stranding is one of my favorite games. On top of that you've got an incredibly deep and flexible combat system that feels great to learn

I think these games live and die on their idiosyncrasies and a lot depends on the degree to which you find those idiosyncrasies charming and engaging or annoying and outdated. When I see games like Dragon's Dogma and Death Stranding apply these design choices to fantasy and sci-fi respectively, it makes me want a dozen more games like them in different genres.

It feels kind of silly to say but I rarely ever have more then like two, maybe three, ferry stones with me at best and so I frequently have to decide if warping somewhere is a good idea or if I should just run/oxcart the trip instead. Especially since the ferrystone can really save my rear end during an escort/time limited quest or something and most games don't really make you think about travel time and space like that. I don't think I'd want every game in the world to be like this either, I don't think I could stand an Elden Ring without ready access to warping.

I've gotten quite a few ferrystones just from wandering around and only finally used one recently, as such I only carry one at a time since the destination most likely has an inn or my house anyway.

I finished up archer and now want to finish mage for that stamina augment, so it's been quite a bit of a playstyle adjustment since I am not controlling the battle nearly as much. I did thief just enough to get that aggro-resistance augment, so that's been a great boon to these vocations.

Oh yeah, baby. Frame your suffering as a masterpiece. Only one problem - no one's watching. It's boring, buddy, boring as death.
Onto NG+ after hitting level 50. Tried out in order;
Mage, Warrior, Mystic Spearhand, Magic Archer
Mage was interesting, if underpowered feeling, but a good support class.
Warrior was meaty and impactful and knocking enemies over and then wailing on their head was hugely satisfying
Mystic Spearhand took a lot before it felt useful, charged bolt was useful, but the real win is the invulnerable shield at will with no cooldown.
Magic Archer also took a bit of getting used to but was just OP as hell once you get a few skills together and know how to use them.
I absolutely loved just being in this world, even if the balance and difficulty falls away after midgame pretty badly
The story is incoherent as gently caress but the world is cool

I played this straight after mainlining FF7Re2 and I have to say this game had way more moments that impacted me (outside some of the cinematic story elements), sure that game is polished as gently caress and feels like a billion dollars went into it, but I think this game is just more interesting, is going for something really unique and I totally get the "best 7/10 game ever" narrative that surrounds the previous game.

I'd love to see some other studio try to crib this or do a game really heavily inspired by the systems in it.

My character looks like a magical girl now that I have Magic Archer and this armor that is like a blue skirt.

I'm going to try and bee-line the main plot now and just focus on quests and stuff on NG+, since I'm mad about missing that one major side quest.

I had a weird fight with this Golem on the volcanic island (where I got Magic Archer) where it took forever to kill him once he was almost dead. He would go for these long periods with no visible weakpoints where nothing did damage to him, and then a weak point would appear briefly (during which he may or may not take damage). I never figured out what was happening, though he did finally die. I've fought one other Golen (I think a different lesser variant) and didn't have this issue with it. Very easy fights though - the thing seemingly had zero ranged attacks.

edit: How do 10.4% of players have the hot spring achievement, but only 0.2% have "Returned to Agamen Volcanic Island"? Maybe the latter is bugged?
